I have a 4.0 in my Eagle, originally because I got it cheap, only 400 clams for the engine, complete with all EFI parts and harnesses. It has about 50% more power than the stock 258, better mileage and driveability, and is less troublesome (less maintenance and oil leaks). The 258 has better low end torque, the 4.0 revs better, you pays your money and you takes your choice. Overall, I agree with Andrew, a good 258 w/ the EFI kit will give you most of what a 4.0 upgrade would cost, but cheaper and without the hassle of an engine swap. If you really want more power, you might consider just the 4.0 head. Or if you really want more power, put your 258 crank in a 4.0 block for a 4.9. I hear strokers rock!
