The price is about average for salvage yard engine. "Running", by the way, doesn't mean it won't need rebuilding, only that it will crank and run. Even if it blows a lot of smoke and ticks a bit (usually from rotted valve stem seals and collapsed/stuck lifters) "running" is still worth it. You know there's no rod knocks or major issues. Inspect the bearings, and if they aren't showing more than say 25-34% copper, put a timing chain on, check clearance for oil pump, rebuild heads, and drive it 20-30K miles before rebuilding the lower end. You might get by a bit longer by putting stock replacement bearings in too, but I'd let that go and just plan on rebuilding in 3-4 years. The 8.8" Explorer/Mountaineer axle, or even a 4.3L V-6 S-10 axle would be a good choice. Put the spring mounts from the original Rambler axle on the Ford/S-10 axle tubes and use the stock springs. The only thing you can do for the front is use 62-66 V-8 springs. That or order a set of new ones from www.coilsprings.com to your specs (say 15% stiffer than stock, or the stock HD six springs). 70+ is a totally different suspension design and the springs won't work. Even if they would fit, because of the placement (more leverage) they have to be a lot stiffer than the older ones -- way to stiff!! Spring rates are 100s of pounds more than the older ones, which were directly over the steering knuckle. ---------------- Date: Sunday, March 4, 2007 11:28 PM From: d stohler <das24rules@xxxxxxxxx> so, i got a buddy who knows a guy who owns a wrecking yard. said he has some 304's. a "rebuildable" motor he wants $250. for a "running" motor he wants $400. he said thats my buddies price. who knows how much he wants to charge me. how reasonable is that for amc motors? also, im going to assume that a flywheel for a 360 is going to be ballanced way different than for a 304 correct? or could the 360 be ballanced to work for the 304 or are they all internally ballanced so they will work with each other? with the whole t-tube breakage, has made my drive for replacing my drivetrain alot more. 304/t5/??? for rear axle? maybe an 8.8 from a mountaineer when they were still solid axle. disk brakes and "track-lock". i already have a triangulated 4 link rear end to put in. would springs out of a later amc fit in my car? mainly the front. it is coils all the way around. im not to worried about the rear. the front i want some stiffer springs. say out of a heavier 70's-80's car? _______________________________________________ Amc-list mailing list Amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx http://www.amc-list.com/mailman/listinfo/amc-list
