Good point! And it's easy to test somewhat.

Cruising flat and level at steady speed, make it
drone. Accellerate lightly; does sound change? Back to cruise
speed, decellerate lightly; does it change?

By doing that you're making ring and pinion touch on the leading
gear tooth faces and then trailing faces. If the sounds changes
"a lot" it's differential trouble, worn gears (lack of lube?) or
carrier bearings. Could also be axle bearings if their really
bad.

It's a zero-cost, uninvasive test...
