A: The AMC 2.5 with 1 bbl TBI should fit better by an inch or so.

The Aussie EFI intake with the runners curved over the valve
cover MIGHT
fit in a 58-63 American without removing the hump, the carb
intake
definitely won't. There's only a couple inches difference
(estimating
from the pics), but that's enough! Take the outer barrel off the
carb
intake and it would fit. The left to right placement of the two
barrel
carbs is what I found that prevented using a modern four
cylinder also.
I didn't find one that placed the barrels front to back and a
bit closer
to the head. Since they all used progressive linkage the side to
side
mount works better. The early 2.3L Ford used progressive
linkage, but I
don't recall if the barrels are side to side or front to back. I
do
recall the intake doesn't stick out as far as later, better
flowing
ones.

The early American engine bay is tighter side to side than the
early
Mustang/Falcon/64-69 American. That engine barely fits in a
Mustang bay.
The header shown on the Ford Six site won't fit either. I'll
haveto
check, but I seem to recall the engine bay as being 23-24"
between the
suspension mounting points. It gets wider above the upper
control arm
mounting points, but the distance between the humps is only a
couple
inches more at the peak of the hump. The humps stick out at
least two
inches from the rest of the inner fender panels. Cut the humps
at just
the right spot and you can weld the inner panel to the outer
without
adding metal (I THINK...), but I'd add a piece anyway for
strength.

" adapters are available for early bells (64-66 -- should be
T-96??)

afaik all the adapters originated with 'hacksaw al', linked to
at
http://www.fordsix.com/tech/index.php - unfortunately, he's out
of the
biz and the pages are long gone.

i didn't get the adapter info but i did manage to save the
bellhousing
pg before it vanished. his dates are a little different - '60-5
for
the ford '2.77' [t96?] and '67 - mid-'70s for the '3.03' [aka
t150],
with a few others scattered about. maybe that '64-6 is for the
dagenham 4sp used briefly.

they added a second bellhousing pattern in '66, a slight
variation on
the earlier, and there's a '66-7 bell used with a '4-bolt
topcover'
tranny not otherwise identified. he did say this bell is a
little
taller than earlier ones.

i did catch that he sold his adapter line to a vendor, but

i just looked at the site. they don't say -anything- about what
engines their ford kits are for, or what trannies they replace. my
guess - they -assume- you have a v8.

Hmmm... IIRC the 2WD Jeeps use the same rotors as the 4x4, they come off
the hubs. I don't think the hubs will fit AMC car rotors.

I haven't looked at the AMC/Jeep 2.5L in a while, but it won't likely
fit even if it does have another inch of clearance, not without some
work on the left side (intake side... just in case it's not on the left
as I recall...) hump. Maybe a big hammer instead of removal, though I'd
rather make it nicer looking -- maybe a small cut and dish in, or cut it
out and reverse it... hmmm...

The Mitsubishi 2.6L was a little closer than the GM 2.5L IIRC (80s
Mitsu), but it would have still hit the hump. It's just close in there
side to side!

There are two motors that I have seen used in early Ramblers
that seem to go in as if the factory installed them. For really
early Ramblers the 2000 or 2300 overhead cam I-4 does a
really clean installation. For later Ramblers the 3.8 Buick or
4.3 Cheverolet V6 sure look good in them. All 3 engines have
a wide selection of after market performance parts available
to do almost anything thing one wants to with them.
Another engine that might be used more than it has been
is the Pontiac Iron Duke engine which also has a wide availability
of performance parts and was used by AMC in later Spirit and
Concord applications giving a number of transmissions that it
would mate up to. Probably including other GM I-6 engines too.
Any of the above engines with some work should be a lot
simpler to install than either of the Ford 200 or 250 cu in engines.
Both of which seem to have a very poor reputation for performance
or economy although appear to have been very rugged engines.
John.

IIRC there was a few years of MJ and XJ 2 wheel drives that used the one piece hub/rotor. I can't remember which ones it was off hand early or late?

early were the 2-piece. iirc eagles also used those rotors.

I think if I were set on swapping into a 63 I would use the AMC Jeep 2.5.
Get the MPI engine and it would be fairly easy for the intake to be modified/shortened/turned or whatever it takes to gain clearance.
I'd look at something resembling sidedrafts or a single "carb" look.
With the MPI you can do a lot of intake modifications. since you don't need to worry as much about loosing the fuel since there is only air in the intake.

WTB Badly: any AMC Eagle SX/4, Wagon, etc. Need to replace my 97
Dodge
Diesel with something that gets ok gas mileage and still be able
to tow my
trailer. I've always wanted one of these and it should fit my
needs
perfectly (and i get to add to my AMC collection at the same
time). Im
located in Niceville, FL (panhandle, FL) would like something
local, but i
can drive up to 400-500 miles if need be. I need something in
good running
shape, body doesnt need to be great however. Just need a
reliable vehicle.
Can pay cash or can trade (partial or full depending on
condition of car)
either a 70/71 383 Chrysler Bigblock motor with 727
tranny(complete) or a
'03 Honda XR650L (street legal dirtbike). Any help would be
apprieciated in
locating one of these in this area, thankyou.
