Like > you, if anyone knows anything more I'd like to hear it! I hardly know anything about the 196, though I'm enamored with the aluminum one. But I do know that the aluminum 196 uses the same lifters and some other valvetrain parts as the 232, so possibly the changes were to accomodate a unified parts bin.
