the xj wheels like the eagle's already have a lot of offset for a rwd

wow.

i know from my own experience that a non-o/d t14 is ~2" shorter than a
non-o/d t96. i'd heard, and it seemed logical, that the o/d t14 was
the same length as the t96.

I am still in the search of more power for my '63 196 in my american
convertible. Thanks for the earlier input. I know that the T96od is the
weak link, and would love to replace it. THANK YOU!

Hello all,
I've recently acquired my first AMC car; a '61 Rambler Wagon Deluxe.
Here's some pics: http://www.indianachevelles.com/pellwagon.html

It has the aluminum overhead valve 6 cyl and OD 3sp manual trans. I
even have the original bill of sale with the car.

My plan is to spend some time on it over the winter months to get it
roadworthy. First thing I need is some tires.
Can anyone tell me what tire size I need to purchase (ie 185/70/R15
??). The tires are supposed to be 15"x6", and I want to get as close to
the original height as possible.

Thank you,
Mike

http://www.teufert.net/speedo/tires.htm is a link for tire conversion...

Likely was originally 670x15 size. Radials could be 195R15, or 205/75R15.
or possibly 215/70R15. .

Might want to consider steering ease on this. I didn't notice a power
steering pump on that engine. Narrower tires should make it easier for
steering. If it is hard steering with the present tires perhaps you will
not want to get wider tires.

Your tire store should have a look at it and offer some advice.

In my exerience with 60's era Ramblers going to Radial tires eases steering effort.
I'd go with the tire that fits your style.

If it's not been mentioned yet by others have the car aligned to get as much caster [or at least what an early 80's AMC had] as possible. The added caster will increase steering effort some, but the car will track much better at highway speeds and have less tendancy to "dart around".

Didn't I see somewhere that someone makes a volt gauge to put in place of the fire hazard ammeter in these?
I can't remember who though.
YOu could probably get one made up, but if someone does them on regular basis it would likely be cheaper than a one off custom.

be advised, for a non-o/d t14 you'll have to lengthen your driveshaft
~2". if you didn't have the big nut rear end you could use a later
fine-spline t14 and long '70s yoke, as i did on my '68, to make up the
difference. i'm not sure when the t14 went from coarse bw spline
output to fine tf spline; it may not have been '72.

whether or not a t14-o/d is the same length as a t96-o/d we've now
heard two differing opinions.

depending on how much more power you aim for you may want a stronger
clutch. i think there's a way to fit a 10" unit, if the parts are
still available...
--
i've been noodling for a while - there are t14s and r10 o/ds
available, but very few t14-o/d combos. would there be a market for
repro t14-o/d mainshafts and tailshaft adapters?

I wonder if Ebay planned it that way that they had a RM day this past
Tuesday October 24th, where most anything you shoved on their site was 20
cents. But then all those auctions will end 7 days later on Halloween. Can't
let stuff interfere with getting lots of loot by trick & treating. Paige
will be at work that night and I'll be stuck here with the kiddies. Already
have the place decorated and have not put out the fog machine yet, that is
usually good to make a few small kids pee on themselves.

Anyhows, with that in mind, the best thing about when fee-bait has a 5 cent,
10 cent or 20 cent listing day is something that normally might cost someone
$5 to $6 to list is only 20 cents. There are a number of AMCers who we all
mail each other as soon as someone finds out. I don't know how some of these
fellows find out this stuff, whether in advance, or sleeping with ebay exec
or something. Maybe it is the time zones. Yea, time zones. But we all shove
as much junk on there for discount as possible after word spreads!

So on Halloween, in between the door bell ringing with ghosts, goblins,
devils, spooks, feel free to look thru these:
http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZeddiestakesQQhtZ-1
to see if anything spooky worth getting. Have a good evening,

Justin,

I carry a complete line of engine parts for AMCs most
of which I typically have in stock. Contact me off
list with you specifics needs and I will see what we
can do. I am sure I can beat Napa's on just about any
AMC part.

Hi, Guys:

I dropped off a head to be rebuilt at the local Napa
machine shop.
They have done excellent work for me before on a set
of IH 304 heads and a
set of Stude 289 heads.

Anyway, I got a call back that they cannot find valves
or other
components. If find this a bit odd . . . I have had
Rambler 196 heads
rebuilt before and have never heard of a problem
finding parts, but of course
haven't used this place.

I looked at Kanter, and they want $15/valve, which in
valves alone will
run me $180, and that doesn't include guides or seals.

My question is: other than Kanter, is there a "one
stop" place to buy a
complete set for rebuilding a head? Or do I have to
buy individual
component pieces?

My other question is: I have a collection of NOS
engine parts, so I
dug through boxes of valves. I have various valves for
196 heads, but
none that are specifically for a 1960 head. How much
did the heads evolve
over the life of the 196 OHV engine?

- Justin
