I have a 69 Ambassador SST, 290 Typhoon, AT, AC, PS, PDB, tilt, tint,
electric wipers, rather loaded with original Pompeii Yellow paint. It has
rust in trunk and a few other areas like a few holes in roof. However, it
cranks right up, runs and driver great, no klunks, rattles when driving.
Everything works from electric wipers, to turns, brake lights, ect. AC needs
charging but has complete system.
The lady I bought it from had a number of records, and somewhere here I have
a lot of the original sale of paperwork, as the car was sold new in St.
Louis, MO.

Anyhows, I need to move it one way or another. I have debated parting it
out, as I could use the windshield, and possibly a few odds and ends.
However, darn it, it is a good running car! Might be a good first AMC for
someone or maybe a winter beater. This is my ad off epage.com and if you
need more photos, let me know:
http://epage.com/js/mi/c0/1853577.html

It was a no sale on ebay at $975.00 and there is a good description of the
vehicle there although photos are now gone:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4630772691

Either way it has to go, along with the 74 Hornet Sportabout I have for sale
for $575. http://epage.com/js/mi/n0/1621044.html

I hate to part out either but I do really need to move both, and would like
both gone before end of year. Thanks for looking!

I don't know anything about the 196 ohv engine but from what people have
said the intake valve is in the head and the exhaust is in the block, is
that right? In the 1950's I did some work on flat head Fords and we would
port and relieve the block for better breathing. Wouldn't the same procedure
work on this engine? It sure helped the flat head Fords to breathe better
and you could run a hotter cam. Just a thought.

That's Ok I think I left all the 1's in front of the compression heights when I sent the last reply out!
Someone on here asked me about using the Early Hemi pistons in the 327. I forget who. I was looking at Arias catalog and I see these pistons are so very close to being right for the 327! Being as they are forgings IIRC it looks like by simply removing the big valve reliefs on the inboard/outboard edges from the machining process they could well be a wonderfully easy piston choice.
Ideally the piston would need the valve reliefs not cut and the pin cut to The AMC spec. I get the feeling that you might as well just count on buying a "custom" forging as that is what they will charge you for!
Back to my early rambling, How much could decking will an early Gen I engine stand? That would be the easiest approach to the problem of no longer having the 4 barrel pistons available. Flip side is if your spending $330+ on the two barrel pistons for replacement you might as well spend $600+ to get the forged customs.
I was hoping to find a dished piston that would allow bringing the quench into modern spec and keep compression at or under 9.5-1.

there are two 196s, a flathead and an ohv derived from it. no f-head
version. the ohv has both valves in the head. there's also a rare
version of the ohv with an aluminum block but i think an iron head.

Hello,

I have a 1967 Rambler Wagon that I have had since 1973. It has been in my
garage and I have had it running this year. I broke the stud for that mounts
the thermostat housing and have had no success in removing the broken stud. I
plan to drill it out, and maybe insert a heli-coil.

My problem right now is that I have to get the vehicle ID verified so that I
can complete the DMV paper work and keep my original black California plates.
Does anyone know a peace officer, DMV employee, Auto Club or Vehicle Verifier
that would stop by my house and sign the DMV paperwork for me? I live near
Almaden Expressway and Branham Lane in San Jose. It would only take a few
minutes.

Thanks,
John

Still cogitating over a Rambler hot rod. Pretty much settled
on a Rambler six, 3-speed/OD, rambler rear. Probably a stock
motor or minor performance hacks.

Ignoring "sheet metal" or glas for now, thinking about chassis;
rails, front axle, all that rot. The hot rod stuff (aka old ford
repro and workalikes, and aftermarket fitments like Mustang II
front ends), it's all quite doable.

But then I stumbled upon photos of a 1984 Jeep CJ chassis --
it's of course just a pair of rails that suuuure looks a lot
like a 32 Ford! (If you take off your glasses and squint.)

Close enough to make an all-AMC hotrod!

(eBay is a great way to check out random ideas for Stuff; what's available,
how much, etc. This one is too crappy and too far away for me, but
good enough for looking at: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1984-JEEP-CJ-CHASSIS_W0QQitemZ250037634201QQihZ015QQcategoryZ6280QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem )

So there's two ways to go with this:

1) strip a Jeep literally down to the rails, lower suspension to
street-car height (swap out springs etc), and find/modify/make
a rod style body to go on it. I'm not sure how low it could go,
the rear fram arch isn't very deep (but I wanted a "tall boy",
hotrod-wise). This would then be a 4wd hotrod?

Eh, it's too much of a jeep to be a hotrod.

2) Go further and strip out the front axle. I've never heard
of a short jeep w/2wd, but what do I know. But of course a beam
axle would do just fine -- lots of parts there!

It would be a real Rambler Mentality hot rod, in the good sense
-- fun, old style, cheap and all Rambler!

OK, *NOW* I go to a junkyard with camera, tape measure and
notepad!

I will be parting out a 1977 AMX Hornet, he car is yellow exterior with all
black interior. This car is equiped with an 258-6 auto tranny. the reason I
am parting it out rather than selling it whole is that the car has cancer on
a few panels such as the fenders hood and doors, other than that the car has
a complete interior and runs very well. e-mail me if you have any requests

John,

Regarding your broken stud: You may be able to use a left handed drill bit
or a screw extractor to remove it. The stud should not be torqued into the
block so it might come out without much fuss. If you know someone who can
TIG weld, you can try having them weld something to the end of it and
backing it out that way. There's nothing wrong with your plans to use a
screw insert but the thermostat housing is a fairly tight fit over the
studs so there isn't much wiggle room.

Here's what you need for hardware in case anything's turned up missing:

2 - 5/16" studs (one short, one long -- don't have the lengths handy but
you should replace both of them) with course threads on the block end and
fine threads on the other
2 - 5/16" flat washers (these go against the thermostat housing)
2 - 5/16" lock washers (these are probably bad anyway)
2 - 5/16" fine thread nuts

I also recommend putting Permatex #2 on the block end of the studs (and the
gasket itself) and a very light coating of anti-seize over the studs to
keep this from happening.

Matt
