I usually do one carburetor a year, minimum, the snow plow sets all spring, summer and fall without use. F350 4 x 4 with a 400. I can't afford to move that one too often so the carb suffers the pains of being dry for several months. I fabricated the choke bracket and the two connecting links, high idle and choke yesterday after work Installed the carburetor and the Spirit lives. The car starts fine, runs on high idle fine, although more adjustments in the linkage will improve things. After warming up the car did something I'm certain it hadn't done for quite some time, Idle. Alas, this is a troubled Spirit, cylinder number six isn't firing. I didn't have time to dig into some of the obvious causes, but it seem to have spark, atleast when it knocked on my butt I figured that was a good indicator. What a rush.. I was tempted to button it up and go for a ride, but like I said, "out of time for today." This Holley substitution for the Carter seems to be a good one. I think I would still prefer the non-feedback Carter due to the ease of adjustments that carburetor offers. Who knows, I'll keep my eyes open, with my glasses on, for one off a slant super six. If I had a dime for every one I changed accellerator pump rubbers on in 1977. . . I have to let the Spirit set for a few days while I get the Truck ready to move the AMX. She needs brake work and general service before the trip. If not, you should! Then you shouldn't have to pull and clean the carb every year. You can get it at Lowe's or auto parts stores. I've used it in my motorcycle and it works great. The bike carbs have VERY tiny passages (one for each cylinder, so they have to be!) that plug very easy, and the carbs are a tight fit -- PITA to get off an on! I do it every year and the pontoonboat has a 20 Gallon plus tank [OUCH!]. I've never had a single problem since being given and following this advice. Lots of room in the trunk on one of these for a big lpg tank! 4 barrel 327 runs about 9.7-1 in compression the jeep engine you have is two barrel and drops down around 9-1, maybe 8.7-1. I think the two barrel just uses a shorter piston height. I've never found the piston heights to know for sure. I've wondered for a while if the two barrel motor could be decked to bring it up to four barrel specs, or even where the pistons set in the bores on the four barrel motors. Could the four barrel motors be decked to raise compression if they are down in the bores. I guess I could look since I've got a shortblock in my shop! There's a little bit about that motor in Dick Dotson's books (scattered throughout the book... with a lot of editorializing :-) The motor for all its limitations sounds brick-sh*thouse rugged. I would be surprised if you could not do the same with the flat head cam. No one will likely have cores so you will need to provide one. The actual grind can be worked out with the cam shop after they or you provide initial cam specs. Plus you have to look into the whole thing of the cam then having a reduced base circle, How is that addressed with a flat head??? Plus then making sure the springs are up to it! I'm sure Frank S. will likely have some input on this one! Last what is the existing power band like in a flathead? You may kill it if you do much of anything!!! I wouldn't run hardly any boost, but hell, anything would help that thing. 3, 4psi? It would look great! If you don't know (Mark does), the carb bolts right onto the HEAD. The "manifold" is scraped out gouges on the inside of the head, somewhat (umm...) limiting flow. You could bolt the turbo outlet right to the head, get a sideways Carter YF from a Corvair... Man that would look cool! Simply size it for reliability and the weak T98 transmission and not stress the motor. Simply size the turbo such that maximum boost at maximum engine RPM is well within safe range and you could dispense with all controls and pop valves.
