[AMC-List] Crazy



If a server isn't off, an online "archive" isn't working: where are the posts submitted between 12:44PM and 7:34PM on Thursday, August 24?  AMC can't grow beyond a "car joke" status if AMC info can't be accessed.  And if AMC as a hobby is a car joke, it may get fewer and fewer laughs each year.

Plymouth introduced a new CONCORD --- not "Concorde" --- model: Concord, Cambridge, and Cranbrook.  Massachusetts sites for two plus one more "C" named for a town in the province of British Columbia (Plymouth had used Canadian paint names since 1949), for an arts institution (founded in 1904) in Bloomfield Hills, or for a street in Detroit (where a Cranbrook Drive intersected with a Cambridge Avenue and a Concord Street existed near an old Dodge plant) --- or it simply sounded English enough and "posh" enough to use.  If you chose #2, you win something: a nice new Plymouth, maybe?

Car guys won't use the wrong wrenches or the wrong spark gaps; don't use the wrong words or the wrong dates either.  Grill those brain cells or else they will turn into toast.  More from less.  That's what America [n Motors] needs now.  More info and fewer bugs will also be good for the collector AMC grille.

I asked about a 2006 Chilson's some weeks ago.  Not one word was posted.

I asked about 2006 AMC too.  Not one, but several, mags said something.

10/05 CC (p. 109 --- unnumbered --- grrr): last car in the "Freaks and Geeks' article is a '75 Pacer "coupe" that needs a 282.  No not a joke.  P. 8: '67 Rambler American "only thing cooler than the '69 Road Runner"; p. 15: '73 Victory Trans Am (a red and Domino beauty in Castlegar BC...); p. 52-56: teach an AM dash new tricks; pp. 62-66: paint an AM engine bay; p. 73: AM in ad, and p. 8?: a "Wrongler" photo.

In 10/05 HR (which reports that "Nissan changes its plans to badge the upcoming US-market Skyline GT-R an Infinity" --- a Japanese BMW is an INFINITI --- an Infinity is a CD in a DC Jeep) AMC is Freiburger's '77 J10 (he "got it for free"), '81 Scrambler (not a bike?), plus '46 and '47 CJ-2As --- costing $100): shall "AMC 4-ever" always sound out "cheap?"

9/06 (224) RR surprises with the one-off '68 Marlin Turin show car: I will let that joke die without comment, since no one is still reading.  And it ranks right up there with the '79 Matador Barcelona II coupe.  Both made overseas.

No one cars about names and numbers.
    
Funniest of all is 9/06 HMN.  Following its one-page car history quick reads (one calling a '52 Cadillac "zoftig" [zaftig preferred...] and one failing to recall a '72 Gremlin Voyageur [French preferred...] in recalling a '37 Hudson Utility --- oh well, AMC is recalled --- or goes along for a ride --- in the Hydra-matic transmission and Saginaw steering articles...), the fun begins.

For $16k you can buy a '73 Buick Estate wagon: not original; restored.  For $50k, a '69 AMX: not original; resto.  For $30k, a '69 AMX; ditto.  For $55k, a '69 AMX 16k-mile orig; not resto.  Or for $9,5, a '78 Matador Barcelona sedan with only 32k miles --- a nice piece of late AMC history.

But for the true AMC crazy --- that car nut that [who preferred...] cares not at all how much a '70 AMX grill costs or how much it costs to buy a '70 AMX grille (that he or she has the wherewithal to buy an AMX and a computer might be even funnier...) --- is the iconic AMC offered on p. 310.

A '74 Matador coupe with 304 automatic (no mileage shown) for $115,000.

"Yes, it's expensive" they are professional enough to state.  YA THINK?

Maybe it's as rare as that $12k '72 Ambassador wagon that was for sale [for years] in Quebec --- or that prototype '65 Ambassador convertible that was for sale last week.  Maybe AMC is a new Duesie doozie of cars.

Maybe it'll be bought by someone who took HMN's Alaska tour, which, HMN wrote (twice) included a visit to the "Bouchard Gardens" in Victoria BC.

Maybe AMC isn't the last bad car joke; maybe car people are just crazy.

And maybe gas will cost 27.9 cents per gallon again --- just as it did when I first filled the tank of my 1971 Ambassador Brougham --- 35-1/2 years and 36,500 miles ago.  When it hits 1,000 miles-per-year, it will be time to drive it or sell it to someone to revive.  It'll be an "expensive" crown jewel of AMC history, but I doubt it will be worth $115k.

AMC isn't that crazy.  

Lastly, a note (that probably won't be read even if it is archived...) to everyone who calls any AMC a "preservation car."  If you research one of the [dealer display ad] AMXs in HMN, you should note that it is "Only 3% Finished in Black" (their caps, not mine).  That's not so you can paint the other 97% the color of your choice.  That's to tell anyone looking for a preservation car that it is re-finished under the 10% HPOF limit.

Words have very specific meaning and they translate into dollar values.
