I have two 1970 AMXs for sale (one very nice one and one so-so) and a few
rare parts. Unfortunately, my wife has undergone two neurosurgery operations
that spelled the end of my car funds. I've had these cars for quite some
time and am only selling them for that reason. I have tried to give good
honest descriptions and a few pictures are posted at
http://home.grandecom.net/~rlovell/AMX/ . I will be adding a few more and I
can also email specific requests If you are interested, please email me at
rlovell@xxxxxxxxxxxxx or ronald.lovell@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx . I don't have set
prices on these, instead, I am looking for a reasonable ""best offer""! Ron
Car #1: 1970 AMX with 360 automatic, Ram Air, GoPaK, Twin Grip positraction
rear end, AMC Ralley Wheels, A/C, P/S, Power Disk Brakes, Tilt Wheel, Rim
Blow horn, Electric Wipers. Rare color combination - White exterior with red
interior. According to production records at AMXfiles.com, it is 1 of 141 so
optioned. Very original rust free southern car that needs very little work
to make it atop dollar car. I take it once or twice a month on cruise nights
and would not be afraid to drive it anywhere. Engine / trans are in very
good condition. A/C is not installed, but I have the a/c compressor and
mounting brackets. The engine compartment is very clean Interior -The
interior needs carpet in back and the headliner is sagging. The driver's
vinyl seat is torn, but the passenger seat looks like new. The dash,
console, guages, door panels, and front carpet are very nice. The wood grain
is good on dash but a little worn on console. Has tilt wheel and rim blow
wheel that works. Steering wheel has one crack at 12:00 position. Exterior -
Body panels are straight and rust free. Comes with the one year only ram air
hood that works. Tail lights are nice. Bumpers are very descent. Grille is
very presentable, but has a couple of broken pieces, which are repairable.
Pictures show Ford GT wheels, but it now has same Rallye wheels as seen on
the orange car. The tires and battery are less than 6 months old. Car #2 -
1970 AMX with 390 automatic, Ram Air, GoPaK, Twin Grip positraction rear
end, AMC Ralley Wheels, P/S, Power Disk Brakes, Electric Wipers. Bittersweet
Orange with Black interior. A previous owner started disassembling it for
""restoration"" and then lost interest. During the long years in storage,
the car and many of its parts were separated. A friend's son came across it
and managed to buy it, not realizing how rare/expensive interiors, dashes,
and grilles were for the 1970 AMXs. So he used 71-73 javelin parts instead,
or just didn't replace some things (no seatbelts). Eventually, he also lost
interest and I boughtit from him. Engine/Trans -The engine was rebuilt and a
higher stall torque converter installed, headers and flowmasters. It runs
very strong, sounds really good, but has the occasional tendency not to
start after it gets hot. So its kinda embarrassing when you are down at the
Pig Stand on Saturday nights and you have to wait for it to cool down.
Interior -Wrong year/model interior! Seats, dash and doorpanels are from a
71-73 Javelin. Exterior -The body is pretty solid, but the hood has a few
spots starting to bubble up under the shadow mask. Orange paint is about 3
or 4 years old and looks very good. Black shadow paint has some bubbles in
front. Wrong year/model grille, its a 71-73 Javelin grille made to fit. All
in all, it is a fairly solid car with a strong drive train that will make an
excellent base for restoration or take all of the interior parts out of a
rusty/wrecked 70 AMX or Javelin and be ready to go. Parts --1970 AMX Ram Air
Hood. Yellow, Very nice condition. Totally rust free. No RAM Air parts
included. 1970 AMX Grill. Good condition. Has a couple of small cracks. All
mounting tabs are intact. 1968-70 AMX/Javelin Rear window louver kit. Very
nice condition. Black, with only the top mounts. No bottom mounts or key.

Mike below is looking for measurments to install his mirror correctly on his
73 Hornet on the passenger side. I have a template for 68-69 AMX on my site
under "restoration"
http://www.planethoustonamx.com/restoration/amx%20pa2.jpg
but that won't help him out. Anyone know how far back he has to mount this
or can send him photos with instructions he would appreciate it!

Eddie,
Still a little confusion. The auction was for a Hornet passenger side
mirror. I have the mirror and the rubber/plastic mounting base/gasket. I
am looking for the mounting template for a passenger side mirror for a 1973
Hornet 2 door hatchback (mine is at body and paint - in primer as we speak
:-) Might even be in color by the weekend...

" My question: My neighbor has a 76 Hornet with a three speed manual. I
" have a T5 from a Spirit. Can we make the swap? Are the bolt patterns the
" same, etc. etc.

all amc sixes, including the jeep 4.0, have the same bellhousing
pattern since '72, shared with '67-up v8s.

in '76 amc was still running out the last few t-14s but i believe they
all went into gremlins. more likely he has a t150, which is a ford
toploader, and a 'short shaft' [falcon/mustang/torino] 4sp or iron
case granada 4sp o/d are straight swaps, shifter aside.

the t-14, t150, and sr4/t4/t5 bolt patterns are all different, and
bearing retainer diameters are different also. they appear to have
used a single bellhousing casting but finished differently for each.
occasionally you can find one with all the patterns drilled, but the
t5 would still be a loose fit replacing a t150 as its retainer is
smaller, 4.64" vs. 4.85". the t5 can be swapped in with bellhousing,
or you could replace the amc bearing retainer for a ford mustang 5.0
t5 one if the t150 bell is drilled with the t5 bolt pattern.

i wouldn't be surprised if the amc t5 output spline and length are the
same as the t150 but i don't know for sure. i do know the input
spline, pilot, and throwout bearing are not. the rear mount is
another possibility for change.

Well not really MY first car, it was my Dad's, but it was also the first car I ever drove. By 1977, the former family car, a '69 Rambler, was abandoned in the driveway. At age 17, I resurected it from the dead and called it my own. After getting it running, I also had to straighten out the body where my older brothers had "adjusted" the factory styling previously. In my last year of high school, I got a lot of snide comments from classmates about the beater Rambler I was driving until I reminded them I didn't have to ask permission to drive it.

It was a Beale St. Blue 440 (they were all 440's in '69 weren't they?) sedan with the 199 in it. No powerhouse by any stretch of the imagination, but it took a lot of abuse (three teenage drivers and an owner who did minimal maintenance) and kept on going. I have always respected the toughness of these cars.

After high school, a summer of working produced enough cash to buy a more stylish (read chick-magnet) car: a '69 Javelin. The Rambler was again abandoned in the driveway where it bio-degraded for a couple of years, then was towed away for scrap.

Even though it was never really my car, I liked to think of it as mine, and I was proud of my accomplishments. Growing up in a family of accountants and book keepers, I was the gear-head and figured it all out by myself.

Clones are getting more respect these days because it's getting so regular people can't afford the real thing anymore. Have you priced a Shelby Cobra kit car lately? The well done HemiCuda clones are starting to push 6 figures now because the real ones are off the chart.

Clones are not bad. Mostly it's someone building the car they would like to have but can't afford. I have read Zazarine's comments on the matter. He's unabashedly against them because a really well done clone can be passed off as genuine, generally not by the creator, but by the second or third owner down the line. That seems to be his problem with clones. However honest the intentions of the creator, the car will eventually wind up in the hands of some scumbag who will try to pass it off as original. To me, that's like saying close all banks because eventually someone will try to rob it. So I say "send in the clones!" and enjoy your car because, after all, it is YOUR car, but don't ever try to pass it off as original unless it is.

There's only two things "wrong" with an AMC 327 (or any GEN-1 V-8):

1. No speed parts. The only thing you can easily do is improve the
exhaust system and air filter. The factory 4V intake takes a Holley
carb, so a carb upgrade is pretty easy, and the stock units are only
like 450 or so cfm -- a 600 cfm would be nice! Later AMC aluminum
intakes can be adapted, but adapter paltes have to be made. It's not to
hard to have a stock cam reground either, but that's about it for easy
-- if you consider changing a cam "easy".

2. When the water pump goes out on a trail, you'd better have a spare!
They are still obtainable, but you're going to be stuck a few days,
maybe even a week, while one is ordered. Same for other hard parts. The
only things you can walk into any auto parts store and get are tune-up
parts, belts, and hoses -- provided you don't mind using universal
hoses.

Not good for a daily driver! That's why I finally gave up on running a
196 equipped American as daily reliable transportation. It was
reliable, but when something did need fixing the car might be down for
a week or two awaiting parts. Not a problem most of the time while I
was in Georgia or MS, I rode my bike. But if something went out on a
long trip I'd have been stuck! That only happened once -- one of the
lower trunnion caps came out. That took two weeks to get and the car
had to sit in a towing company yard the whole time. Luckily the company
took pity on a young USAF guy and charged me a flat fee to keep it
until I got back (this was 15 years ago!). Still, it cost me $200 to
have the car towed and stored (in an open lot) for two weeks, and I had
to rent a car to continue my trip to a training class, ordered the part
and had it sent to the class, then had to rent a car to go back! I was
traveling from SC to Governor's Island, NY, and the trunnion cap fell
off in Maryland. Luckily no damage was done to the car, steering just
got real bad all of a sudden. I just screwed one of the caps from the
new trunnion onto the old one, peened the threads in the arm to keep it
from backing out, and drove on. Now I tack weld every one of those
suckers when I reassmble a trunnion front end. Not really necessary on
most, but it's cheap insurance! The tack weld makes it easy to inspect
them too. If the tack is broke, the joint is starting to seize. Of
course if you keep them greased it should never be a problem! I'd
rebuilt mine a few years before and the threads in the arm were just
tight enough to hole the cap. Should have checked that before a long
trip! Peening the arm is really enough to tighten it up.

A: If the rig in question is a pickup and not a Wagoneer, the front axle is
a D44 that is spring over with closed knuckles and drums. Mine has taken
quite a beating and still handles quite well. (and takes 40 acres to turn
around in a parking lot unless I'm rolling while steering) I do plan an
upgrade to a J20 open knuckle with disc brakes front axle (have the axle but
need to give it a freshen up, new brake hoses and calipers and replace/lube
the joints after welding new spring pads on)
   If I didn't already have a good 304 in my '73, the 327 I just got would
be going in! I do need to fix my powervalve (been too busy just moving stuff
around from the '90 E350 cube van to my storage locker. FINALLY got the Ford
95% unloaded today so I can put it up for sale next week!)
D53 (that's funny! Came up D%# when my caps lock didn't release) has
tough to find wheel bearings, but the rest is very similar to D60. I already
have a D60 full float (from a J20) in the rear (it bolted right in and I did
a rear shackle flip with my engine hoist and a crow bar after undoing the
shocks) so I can haul loads. The "road" to my cabin (I should say the "class
2 in nice weather" trail) is 4.2 miles long gets travelled several times a
week heavily loaded. 6500lbs of concrete slabs (one load), two IH 7.3L
diesels with auto while towing the cube van body (almost the same as mine),
a 12' x 25' metal garage (with extra pieces to close it in and a metal roll
up door), 12' cab over camper that was waterlogged and rotting (the camper
jacks tore out while trying to lift it from the weight), so I had to use my
engine hoist to tip up one end and get it on my truck, then switch and lift
the other end while using a winch to pull it onto the truck.
I scrapped it out (1,000 lbs of aluminum from the shell and I don't know
how much glass. Two 45 gallon barrels after I busted them when no-one wanted
them) and got enough good plywood to build 3 4'x8' shelves in my storage
plus enough kindling to get through winter. The old insulation is being used
to line the outhouse (which will become a shed after indoor plumbing is
allowed). and I STILL had 2,000lbs of garbage and rot to take to the dump!
(the appliances are going to be used in the cabin)

Spro,4x4's i have limited knolage of compared to 2wd cars.and
yes i meant Dana 35's .i thought the early FSJ's used em i stand
corected knwoing that they used Dana'30's and if your
uncomfortable with the 44's i mentioned ok how bout a 3/4 ton
running gear Dana 60 front and rear with the flipped shackles
and a Dana 300 or NP 205 transfer case? Also while I agree about
using a more reliable engine/trans combo whats so bad about the
AMC 327? i thought in 4v form they were tough motors.I see
traditional hot rodders revamping flatties and Ford guys running
tried and true Y block V8's myself included with my 60 Effie.
