" From: "Jim Blair" <carnuck@xxxxxxxxxxx>
"
"
" A: If you score a lockup version of the 727, the mileage drop will be
" minimal on the hwy.

a good point, if most of your driving is highway.

" The '80 to '83 Cherokee also came with 999 as an option
" behind the 6 cyl (you can tell which is which by the pan shape)

999 and not 998? just wondering... eagles all had 998s. -afaik-
wranglers got the first 999s. i'll admit they don't differ much.

" The 32RE
" (and probablt 32RH as well) have weak lockup converters. I have 3 in my pile
" of cores that suddenly quit making the Jeep/Eagle/Concord move. Often just
" as they pulled to a stop. I stripped the trannies down and there wasn't even
" more than a smudge of grit in the pans.

but the 32rh is just another name for tf999 and the 32re is just the
electronic-controlled version of the 32rh, so presumably they all use
the same front pump and can swap converters.

could be they gradually cheaped out on internals - '80s 727s aren't as
beefy as the ones put behind '60s hemis, for example.

There was a thread on the AMC Forum
(www.amcforums.com) on the 71-74 Javelin and AMX
numbers. You might try there. Search the forum under
"Restoration".

Can't help wit the weight.

Andrew is 100% correct -- it doesn't matter whether the donor is an AMC
or Chrysler. The only difference between a Chrysler and AMC TorqueFlite
is the bell housing -- which means the main case. Gear ratios and all
internals are the same. The only difference between 4x4 and 2x4
trannies is the tailshaft housing and output shaft.

Transition years are hard to call! Cars are sold by model year, but
some parts (such as engines) are built by calendar year. So early 77
models (built September-December 76) may have 76 model parts. The
factory parts books don't always make that distinction, though
sometimes they will list two types of a part and what VIN or final
assembly number range they fit. Sometimes. Often just a few cars were
made with the remaining inventory that happened to be still on the line
and not changed out yet.

Aftermarket parts are a totally different story. They try to
consolidate as many part numbers as possible to reduce inventory,
sometimes with disastrous results. The 196 water pump, for example. One
year should fit all, right? There were 3-4 different pumps used, the
early one with four bolts (56-57, maybe 58), the others with five. They
interchange flathead to OHV in the years both were made, but the water
pump housing is different (outlet location) between American and
Classic, and the shafts are different lengths between the American and
Classic. So be careful when ordering one!

The early Pinto had a smaller hatch than later ones. But the ad does
say "wider", not "bigger". Just semantics, but the Gremlin flip up
window (only a "hatch" by a strtch of the imagination to me!) might be
an inch or so wider anyway.

It's been about 50/50 down south. Now most shops bend their own so they
don't have a lot of inventory and get max use out of the expensive
bending machine. Some of the chain stores like Midas and Meineke still
buy prebent pipes for popular models because it reduces time to
install, but they usually have a bender in the shop too. I've had the
best luck using individually owned stores with a bender. As Tom said,
welded joints, and usually better workmanship. If something burns out
five years later I'm not going to worry about getting a few pieces
replaced. If you are, pay the extra $100 or so and get the nationwide
warranty. That's what the extra money is for. Most people don't go in
and use it since they lose their paperwork or there isn't a shop close
by, so the corporation makes a good deal of extra money. That's why
they aren't real concerned about the few people who seem to keep their
car and live in the local area forever, and happily do the warranty
work. Even a restoration is rarely judged by the exhaust system, though
it could be the deciding point in a close contest.

John, it's American, Gremlin, Hornet, Concord and Spirit that
interchange. The exception is 196 powered cars (only 64-65, and no V-8s
those years). 196 crossmembers have no engine mount perches, the rubber
mount bolts directly to the crossmember. Javelin crossmembers
interchange with Rebel/Matador (but not Ambassador -- the mounts are
set back further due to the longer wheelbase).

The V-8 mounts want to bolt up along the rear edge of the six perches,
IIRC. I've welded a plate on top of the six perches and drilled for V-8
mounts. That was a while back -- I forget if I cut the top flat area of
the six perches off or not -- I don't think so. The height is about the
same.

Note that the small cars (American, Gremlin, Hornet, Concord and
Spirit) require engine mount plates that sit in closer to the engine by
about 1/2" than the other cars. I've seen the big car mounts cut and
welded, but Galvin's (www.ramblerparts.com) and liely some of the other
vendors have reproduced plates. Galvin's also has repro'd crossmembers.
He had the V-8 preches made and cuts the six cylinder perches off,
grinds, and welds as you suggested. They are patterned after the
originals and you really can't tell they've been modified.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Yes! Go to www.hirschauto.com and get some of their sealer and cleaner.
I've used it several times and it's some of the best made, and easy to
use. You obviously have a pin hole in the "sweating" area. This sealer
is made to deal exactly with that sort of thing. You have to remove the
tank to seal it, of course.

The sending unit has windings around a slide. The windings are
apparently broke on yours. The only fix is a new sending unit. Most AMC
vendors should be able to supply you with one. If not, a universal unit
can be modified to fit the original mounting plate. Takes a bit of
work, but I've done it.

I don't think the "newer" (mid 70s) AM radios have an adjustment. I
know the older ones have a screw on the back. You almost always had to
take the radio out of the dash to find and adjust the screw.
