The headliner is not just a piece of cloth. There is a foam backing on the headliner cloth maybe 1/4" thick. I guess its purpose is to smooth out the imperfections of the moulded shell and give it a softer feel. When the headliner sags, it is actually this foam backing which has deteriorated. You could simply glue the cloth back onto the shell, but it won't look the same as it did originally. I was in the same situation with my Javelin. The headliner saged, but the cloth was in good shape. I thought about gluing some foam onto the cloth, but was told, from a number of sources, that this would never come out looking right. To do it right, you have to get new foam backed cloth - easier said than done if you want the factory original pattern. I ended up getting a non-original cloth since I don't intend to get the car concours judged. I saw another Javelin done this way, and you hardly noticed the headliner was wrong because the colour was complimentary. It was easy to attach the cloth to the moulded shell with some 3M spray 77 adhesive. The shell was out of the car at the time. I used regular construction adhesive to glue the shell to the roof of the car. I don't know how well either of these adhesives hold up to super-heating as the car is stored in the garage and doesn't get any direct sunlight. If you're looking for original cloth, Tony Zamisch advertizes it on his site: http://www.amx-perience.com/california_classic_amc.htm There may be other sources as well.
