I know there is a large group of people that flag ads to get them removed just because it is something they don't like and I have noticed that most of the AMC ads in this area have been being removed that way. Even mine have been deleted a few times and there was nothing that violated the rules or anything. Jamie Smith Spokane, WA. When I clicked on your link it said the ad had been removed. I wonder why? The cat on my '88 Comanche lost it's internals into the then OEM muffler. I replaced the muffler but not the internals of the cat, and it passed emission sniff test with no probs. They said it was cleaner than most '95 vehicles. Do a google for"Carter BBD fix" and the site will come up. The carb is pretty easy to fix but a quick upgrade is a Motorcraft 2100 carb with 2 bbl 4 bbl adapter and home made linkage. I got 20 mpg average hwy mileage with my mexican 6 with 998 lockup (when it wasn't needing a new torque converter), 225/75/15 tires and 2.37 gears. Same motor with 999 lockup, NP208, 2.72 gears and 235/75/15 tires with 2.72 gears in an '83 Cherokee full size got 20 mpg too. (I try to keep the same effective ratio with my setups and it seems to work well. My 258 powered J10 had a botched carb I patched on the side of the hwy and got 18 mpg with 727, NP208, 3.31 gears and 31" tires. My current '87 Comanche has 33" tires with 3.73 gears and 5 speed.) I would however have the exhaust system redone by Mieneke or some other muffler shop. One of my Eagles ad a leaky exhausts, and with what passes for gas here in Houston, the fumes when stuck in traffic or just stopped at light would make you vomit. I actually quit driving it until I had a day off to take it to Mida's off Gessner, something like $189 for almost front to back inclucing cat converter. I think cat converters are the most worthless pieces of s*** ever put on a vehicle, but it required one, so put one back. Can't help you on the brakes, as I don't do my own brakes! On the carb, Paige's 88 Eagle neede a new carb and it is over counter at O'Reillys, it is a Tomco unit, rebuilt, and about $225 with core exchange. But what a difference. Her carb kept getting plugged up with this yellowish residue. If you look down the carb neck with flashlight, there are two small jets sticking out like a V. You might want to get a can of carb cleaner, with long red nozzle, and stick it in the pinhole openings on both, blowing them out. Those are idles, and they do get clogged and will cause a Eagle or Jeep, to stall, sometimes die, at stops, and just run crappy. Again, some of this has to do with the crappy 'designer gas' different areas of the country use. There is/was a website showing how to do this, I believe Jim (carnuck) sent to me a good whiles back. Just something with my limited knowlege of Eagles thought would toss in! My Three Eagles (whihc sounds like a 60s show) get roughly following gas mileage: 81 Eagle 151/4cylinder/4speed/floor 23-25mpg 82 Eagle 258/AT/floor 15-17mpg 88 Eagle 258/AT/floor 15-18mpg I do not know why the 88 gets a little bit better gas milage except possibly more 'highway' miles than stop and go. Have fun with your Eagle, check this place too: _________________________________________________________________ FREE pop-up blocking with the new MSN Toolbar ? get it now! http://toolbar.msn.click-url.com/go/onm00200415ave/direct/01/ ------------------------------ Message: 3 Date: Thu, 20 Jul 2006 23:11:10 -0700 From: "Jim Blair" <carnuck@xxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: Re: [AMC-List] 401 crank wanted & IH question To: amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx Message-ID: <BAY114-F29099D292CE2DA77E090DBAC660@xxxxxxx> Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed A: The IH 401 is a Red Diamond 6 (I worked on one in an old bus) From: msproviero@xxxxxxxxxxx Subject: Re: [AMC-List] 401 crank wanted & IH question To: amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx Message-ID: <071720060425.20773.44BB112D000597F8000051252200761394019D0A0790019D9F9C03@xxxxxxxxxxx> AMC 304's were not used in IH vehicles. The 304 was an IH motor. If you find a red 304, I would assume it was just an emissions model that Frank referred to and the red paint is just a coincidence with respect to IH. IH also didn't make a "400" or a "401" of their own according to BinderBulletin.org. The largest IH-made V8 displaced 392ci and they call it "the 392". However, I agree that they referred to the AMC 401 as a "400". See below for some search results from BB. You'll have to scroll through some of it due to some random search hits. http://www.binderbulletin.org/forums/faq.php?s=&do=search&q=AMC+232+258+304+401&match=any&titlesonly=0 Try different search combinations including the keyword "AMC". It coughs up some bits of info regarding special tools to service AMC drivetrains and transmissions in the IH world. -Spro _________________________________________________________________ Don?t just search. Stuff like that is a pain in the ass to replace if it breaks because you have to waste time to go looking for it. The likelihood of another D300 being available among wheelers for about $150 is fairly high. I have Drill this weekend, so I will ask around the motor pool about the military axles. Not worth it to bother with the ancient tech in M-715 axles unless you have one. They have closed knuckles and other weak steering parts that I would be wary of, as well as old drum brakes. That would all have to be replaced, as well as the knuckles themselves. I don't know if those old D70's were even 35-spline. Did all D70's have 2-piece carriers like the old ones? _________________________________________________________________ Is your PC infected? While I am at this I will install another headlight switch from a Spirit and a gas gauge out of a Gremlin. Hopefully that will cure my dome light and inst. light problem and also my non functioning gas gauge. What a pain no gas gauge is. I also made an aluminum molding to cover the latch mechanism for the hatch. That needs to just be test fitted and polished out. I also received the billet aluminum radiator overflow tank the I will modify into a windshield washer reservoir tank. When I installed the billet tank for the radiator over flow a few weeks ago it made the original stock yellowed plastic washer tank look real shabby. I have to make a bracket to mount it. I have already modified the filler cap for easy removal and vented it. I will have to modify the inside of the filler neck so the socket can fit into the tank with the nut to mount the pump. I will also have to open up the hole in the bottom of the tank to mount the pump. And then polish the whole tank and put a windshield washer logo on the cap.
