The Volvo kit works for internals, but the pan gasket is different. I ended up using a Mopar RTV type sealant formulated specifically for auto trans applications (available at a Chrysler dealer, of course). It worked fine. If you insist on a gasket you can use strips of cork material along with the sealer. As always, to much sealer leads to leaks... but you know that! ------------------------------ Message: 2 Date: Fri, 7 Jul 2006 06:49:32 -0000 From: <francis.swygert@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: Re: [AMC-List] Band adjustment, little aluminum Borg Warner auto (196/199 in mid size car) To: <amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx> Message-ID: <8B4C911BEBA5E24888E353FF362B9E7702E65FF2@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" ADEQUATELY is the key phrase here! The 196 in a 63-64 Classic wagon is about like the 87 Pontiac 6000 I had with the 2.5L four (or Chevy Celebrity, etc.). Fine around town, a little stressed on long trips, especially if loaded. Just don't get in a hurry and take it easy and it's fine. The 199 is actually a lot better -- the 196 turns a lot slower and takes noticeably longer to build up speed/power. ---- original message ------------------------ " From: Tom Jennings <tomj at wps.com " On Thu, 6 Jul 2006, Ken Ames wrote: " > Other trannys of the same model don't need this. I've had really good luck with this " trans, even though it's small, air-cooled, and in a largeish car " (Classic wagon). otoh it can't be -that- 'largeish' if a 199 will motivate it adequately, automatic and all! The 232 apparently could. Did AMC ship 1964+ big cars with 232 and T96?) ---------------- Nope, no T-96 behind anything bigger than a 196 in the big cars. There were a few 65 Classic fleet cars with 199, they MIGHT have got it. In the small cars it was the same way, but the last T-96 model used in the 70-72 (I think as late as 72) Gremlin and Hornet was used behind the 232. It was a T-96J that had a bigger input shaft and front bearing. As far as I could tell when I had my T-96J rebuilt that's the only change. The J model was ONLY used by AMC a couple years, so it was hard to find a new input shaft! I used that one behind a stock 4.0L and stripped the synchro out after less than 100 miles, and then taking it easy! The synchro is the weak point. Double clutching solved that, but made shifts (especially down shifts) slow. Still have the trans! I wouldn't want a T-96 behind a 232 even in a small car. ------------------------------ Message: 4 Date: Fri, 07 Jul 2006 00:15:54 -0700 From: "Jim Blair" <carnuck@xxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: Re: [AMC-List] oil filters To: amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx Message-ID: <BAY114-F131035024B496E1333CD97AC740@xxxxxxx> Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed Just did a little research and as of '02, it was acquired by Puradyn International (UK HQ) http://www.puradyn.com/company/ir_shareholders.html I think these guys were the previous "owners" or at least one of the manufacturers (I recall the name on several filters) http://www.xingyuan.com/template/develop-e.htm From: Glen Hoag <hoag@xxxxxx> Subject: Re: [AMC-List] oil filters To: amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx Message-ID: <a06230901c0d2f2b0f123@[192.168.123.144]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" ; format="flowed" Which offshore company would that be? Fram is currently a unit of Honeywell, Inc, which merged with AlliedSignal at the end of 1999. Honeywell is an old line American company with global operations, with its headquarters in Morris Township, NJ. The Fram unit is based in Danbury, CT, along with the Prestone brand, which AlliedSignal acquired from Union Carbide in 1985. --Glen _________________________________________________________________ Don?t just search. To: amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx Message-ID: <BAY114-F357B4F99DADA77D4ADC7DFAC740@xxxxxxx> Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed I hired someone to help me dive into the storage locker today (I had 3 days off and spent 2 of them sick as a dog and I was still a bit weak today) which is 10' wide (I think. I put heavy 4' x 8' rack shelving at 1 end and it's a couple feet from the side wall) and at least 27' long (I had 36" tires stacked at the back wall and almost a foot from my '84 J10's rear bumper, plus I had a good 4'-6' in front where I had motors, trans, tcases, engine hoist, toolbox and a 2' x 4' shelf on one side) We got the J10 out a couple months ago, but things have teamed up against me getting back to it. (I spent several weeks moving stuff to my cabin, including the J10 and building a garage to put it in, which I still haven't done. I spent the past couple weeks after work scrapping out a camper that went for scrap aluminum, appliances for my cabin and shelving for the storage with firewood, building materials and minimal scrap to the dump that was mostly moldy, rotten wood that would stink if I burned it in my wood stove) The shelves are up, and my driveshaft/axle collection, easily the envy of any junkyard, is up where it can be seen. (I'll have to move them again when I empty the '90 Ford E350 18' box van of parts and another pair of hopefully stackable 3' x 8' tables I'll load the lighter stuff onto) Very productive day, but only 1/2 the battle so far I'm afraid! (not quite sure how to punctuate that!) Last thing we did before I collapsed to surf the net and eat Chinese food in celebration was pack the free 37" TV set I got up the 3 flights of stairs! (I am NOT looking forward to moving again, which will be hopefully soon so I can use the van before I sell it!) I know I'll be stiff and sore at work tomorrow (visited the Chiro this AM before starting this masochistic venture) but at least I got something measureable done! (I have sorted out some of the chaff I won't need at any rate so a flurry of parts ads will be coming soon! I just sold the NV249 Grand Cherokee tcase on EBay for $50 plus shipping) _________________________________________________________________ Don?t just search. Find. In some instances a wife not talking to you might be considered a blessing. It is in my case as my wife when she gets started sounds like the school teacher on the Charlie Brown cartoons, wa wa wa wa wa wa. My orange Hornet surfaced for sale the second time after I had chased the car for 6 years and had been screwed out of it 4 years previous to me finally buying it. I got it by chance as I had words with my wife and refused to go to her girlfriends grandson's birthday party. A friend called me up told me the car was for sale, took me there, lent me the 500$ for the car for 3 days, borrowed his bosses tow truck and stored the car for me for 5 days till I got plates for it. That's what you call a real friend. The wife came home at 6 pm from the party and I told her I bought the car. She made a face and said whatever and walked away and never said another word. Her girl friend stuck her 2 cents in and said "what does he need another car for?" I now have 2 Hornet's and a beater 77 Malibu and I am the only driver, my wife doesn't drive. I wanted it and I bought it. After working 2-3 jobs at one time over the years and doing with out to raise 3 kids it is now time for ME!!!!!! It says they entered into a strategic alliance with Honeywell Consumer Products Group, makers of Fram. It sounds like they plan to market each others products. The Fram website still says they're part of Honeywell.
