I think you are referring to the capillary tube that runs from the temperature control knob (on the right of the levers, on the 70 small cars) down to the airbox containing the evap unit. 1/8" diameter, like a fat wire? It is removable; there's a single screw and small clamp holdin the probe end into the airbox. Don't crack that tube! It's copper, and contains pressurize freon. If it leaks out you have to buy a new control (about $40 NOS). Yes, they are very breakage-prone.
