I'm swapping a 401 into my 72 Gremlin. That's why the
six cyl parts are for sale.Parted the 87 Grand
Wagoneer to use the 360 engine till i could get the
401 back from the shop and assembled. LUCKILY...the
machine shop finished my 401 work alot sooner than
originally planned. It was squeesed in between alot of
SBC drag and dirt track HIGH $$$$ racing engines. I
was fortunate that they had a little extra time.
Otherwise i would not have gotten it back untill late
this fall!! Now i don't need the 360. I'm starting a
new TIME CONSUMING job next week. So please email/call
my cell and leave a message. I WILL get back with you
as soon as i can. Thanks alot,Joe

A: A Duraspark box on it's way out can cause backfiring as well. I kept a
spare in mine (still have several around. Won't be needing them anymore as
my J4000 is points and the others are all Renix or HO EFI)

Thanks for the tips. I'll start diagnosing this weekend (sigh, I
have
other things to do).

I've got a Duraspark II, I'll check distro and timing and
eliminate all
that. Engine should be like-new (20K mi), so sticky valves seems
unlikely, it's lived on synth oil changed religiously.

I have it pretty lean, so that's a candidate; I'll re-check the
squirter
for stroke and leaks (I had a bad squirt pump diaphragm last
year). It
does seem to happen only when the secondary is open, so I can
rich that
up a jet size or two or three (it never cruises with secondary
open;
it's really easy to feel in the pedal).

I hope it's ignition or sec main jet cuz it's easy to fix and
I'm lazy.

Thanks again!

I finished pulling parts off the 77 AMX, only have a
few incidentals left. If anyone wants anything speak
up now, the owner is salivating towards crushing the
car. Wally, the owner was gone for a week and I
finally got the flairs. I dropped them off today to be
sent to you.
My question is about the plumbing of the brake lines.
Every AMC I see has the drivers front brake line
branched off before the line goes to the balance
valve. Then after the valve the passenger front brake
gets pressure. Doesn't it make sense to run both lines
from the MC to the balance valve, then branch off to
the L/R front? I realize that it would involve more
lines, but it seems better braking would be the
result.
Also, since these brakes (77 AMX disc/drum) are going
on a 64 American, can I run the stop light switch from
the front brake coupler, the afore mentioned coupler.
Then just branch off after the balance valve to go to
the discs? Do I need that warning light set-up on the
balance valve or can I yank it out and toss it, then
just plug up the hole.
I will be putting the 10inch drums from the rear onto
the 68 rear end I put in the car, I got rid of the big
nut rear long ago.

I'd get a brake light switch setup from a later American and toss the pressure switch.
More work now, less hassles later. The one from a 69 looks real simple and easy to swap onto an American such as your 64.

The Kumho Tires/Grassroots Motorsports Magazine $2006
Challenge is a
drag/autocross/concours competition in which entrants
are limited to
a total budget of $2006. This is the seventh running
of the
Challenge, with the budget always equal to the year.

The rules state that you can sell parts to be able to
afford new
bits. It looks like a lot of fun.

<http://www.grassrootsmotorsports.com/news/category/2006-challenge/>

the event is a blast and brings out some wild biult
cars every year. lots of cars that where never meant
to house v-8's, cars built from 7 different cars, home
built locosts, even the magazine is building a car
this year since the editor has been sitting on berkly
for the past couple of years...think light weight FF
motorcylce powered 1200lbs car.

i did the event in 2004 and brought my 82 olds delta
88 and finished 69th out of 74 cars. that was the smae
year as the bat van and the stleath crx, and the
bimmer with the 500cid caddy motor...

http://grmotorsports.com/archives/2004pictures.html

pics from 2004, most of the way down the page look for
wreak racing vw golf, behind thier car is my delta88 i
ran that year.

Joe Gearin, the magazine's advertising sales guy, is a
fan of AMCs,
among other things.

here is the link for his blog and with pics of his
rallycross eagle wagon

(I advertise my EFI business with them.)

which buiness is it that you own? that way i can dig
though the past issue and see what you do?

Russ, it doesn't matter about the brake line routing. The combo valve
(CV) and right brake gets the same pressure as the left brake even
though the left brake is closer to the master cylinder (MC). The line
pressure is equal throughout the system, so it doesn't affect braking at
all. If either front brake blows a line or seal the CV will shut off
that side, but there will still be no front brakes as no pressure would
be applied to them. There is one danger -- if the right front brake
blows out and the CV trips, you will still have a left front brake since
it "T"s out between the MC and CV. That would lead to a very hard pull
to the left when braking. But the CV's main purpose is to warn that
there is a brakes failure, and a smart person doesn't drive a car with
failed brakes.

You don't HAVE to have a warning light, the car will run without it. But
then there's no warning if you have a problem. You can run the disc
brakes off the drum brake junction block and warning light with no
problem. You should install a proportioning valve in the rear brake line
though. The CV has a proportioning valve built into it (thus the name
"combination valve" -- it combines junction block, warning light, and
proportioing in on unit). You can use the Hornet/AMX combo valve in the
American also.
