Frank,
Yes, it's a 232-3 speed.
If I decide to put a V8/auto, it would be a 360/727 as I have a rebuilt 360 sitting on a stand under my workbench, and a rebuildable 727 next to it. Now, this bears another question:
Crossmembers: I'd imagine any Rebel-Ambo-Matador from '67 to '78 or so would fit, and I'd want to get a TF crossmember from '71 up; but would the cm's need to come from a full size car, or would the hornet'grem size fit?

I think the transmission cross member you have
will work,
the mount for the TorqueFlyte transmission is different. There was a
change in cross member configuration and location with the addition of
catalytic converters ~1975. The later cross members have flattened
'humps' leaving less room for the exhaust system.
The front cross members are different. For instance a 1969 Ambassador
has
several inches clearance between the rear of the engine and the
firewall, that cross
member may be the same as your Rebel. Later Ambassadors have the
engine closer to the firewall.
