Ben, there is a fairly large contingent of AMC people in the Seattle-Tacoma area of Washington (http://agon is advertised on the club site as solid. The ad doesn't say "Cross Country", but all big Rambler wagons had the "Cross Country" emblem. Maybe a V-8 swap to replace the 196 if you don't like that, or even a 232/258/4.0L. If it's to be a cruiser/driver and no worries about being 100% original a swap might be a good idea, but the 196 will adequately power the car. Just don't expect to accelerate with modern traffic.
There's also a Northern California AMC club -- NorCal AMC (http://www.sonic.net/rossg/NorCal/Three-05.pdf). There's a member contact list in the newsletter this link sends you to.
