Need Trans Cooler Help

I'm about to put a trans cooler in the 73 Jav.

Which side of the radiator flows trans fluid in and which side goes out (back to the trans)?

Do I need to route the flow through the radiator, into the cooler and back to trans or can I by-pass the radiator completely?
