A: BUT leaving the key on and motor not running with an HEI system will not 
only drain the battery, it will often take the ignition module with it once 
the battery drops to @8volts.

gm hei is an exception to this.  if it doesn't see a trigger within a
certain window it opens the coil ckt.  you can leave the key on as
long as you like without burning the coil up.
