re: 74 Cherokee Bucking/Cutting out Help Please

Hello, thank you both for your reply. I intend to
upgrade to the duraspark or some such electronic
ignition system as soon as I have the bucks, This
cherokee still had the breaker points ignition in it.
I'm going to check all my ignition wires when get home
tonight and make sure they look OK. Points are new
and the dwell is set correctly. I did the duraspark
upgrade on my Jav and was very happy with it.

" I can't say for sure, however in '75 AMC had
problems with their
electronic
" ignition systems and recalled them. I distinctly
remember my '75
Gremlin
" doing the exact same thing. I don't know the entire
process, however
I believe
" it was simply the case of splicing and removing the
transistor?between the
" distributor cap and coil.
"
" Someone else on the list may recall better then I
do.

the prestolite ign used a low voltage trigger signal
that was very
sensitive to connector corrosion, and contact grease
wasn't widely
known or used back then.

the recommended fix was to splice the connector out of
the wires.
these days, contact cleaner and grease would probably
do. or you
could put a '78-up duraspark setup in, with a 'tfi
tuneup' [srch the
web].
