That's the thing that makes it seem so silly.  It is simply a splice, 
with nothing really to hold it in place except whatever pressure is 
applied by the rubber grommet through the firewall.

There is enough of a gap there today (after a couple decades of this car 
living in the California and Mevada deserts) that while it still holds 
the hose pretty well, it doesn't reeally need much in the way of soap to 
force it through. :-)
