"Redline" synthetic transmission oil?

My son just had his '93 VW Golf serviced and the tech noticed that the tranny oil was very thin and clear - it had started out as 75-90 bright red gear lube. Any other experiences with this very expensive ($20/L) product? - or any other Redline product?
