Hi John:
You're right. I mis-read the 10 pt. type. It states that 'Shift
Command' with console and floor shifter was available and that 3
speeds were column shift. It also states that bucket seats were
available with this combination in Matadors but there is no mention
that this was limited to hard tops. In any event, this
seating/console arrangement was not part of the 'Go-Machine' package.
It specifically states that only the 401 was available with a four
speed with floor shift - if the Go-Machine package was chosen. This
was not the case with Javelins.
Presumably there could be station wagons with buckets and floor
shift. Probably not unreasonable - other companies offered similar
options.

Wha?!? You have to tell me what you are reading from,
cuz I just looked at Std Cat of Am Cars 46-75, and I
see no mention of 'no buckets', nor do I see a mention
that the 4-speed only went with a 401. Can you point
to where you saw that...page number, column, paragraph?
not breaking (round things)...just trying to keep facts
straight.
I'm looking at AMC's own literature. Here's the text,
word for word, from the 1971 brochure's Matador pages,
minus items unrelated to this discussion:
"OPTIONS:
Seats & Upholstery-
= Bucket seats - vinyl (hardtop only)
Performance-
= 360 or 401 "Machine Go" package for Hardtop [1]
= Twin Grip Differential (recommended with
performance equipment, req'd option with
3.91 axle)
[1] 401 or 360 CID 4-B V-8, dual exhaust system,
15" x 7" slot style wheels, E60 x 15 polyglas
white-lettered tires, Space-Saver spare tire,
handling package and power disc brakes."
Here's the engine-to-trans combinations available:
Engines Transmissions
232 3-speed Manual on Column
Automatic on Column
258 Automatic on Column
304 Automatic on Column
Automatic on Console
360-2v Automatic on Column
Automatic on Console
360-4v Automatic on Column
Automatic on Console
4-speed Manual on Floor (Go pkg only)
401-4v Automatic on Column
Automatic on Console
4-speed Manual on Floor (Go pkg only)
We can safely 'assume' that ordering an 'auto on
console' automatically forced you to get the
buckets, to allow space for the console.
As such, there are NO 71 Matador wagons out there
with factory-installed buckets and four-speeds.
Both were available in the 2-door only.
