I agree, if it looks good under the cover, not run out of oil or something obvious, check the axle bearings, you can do a quick check by simply jacking a rear wheel and lifting it with a pipe, push/pull in/out, etc, to see if the axle does anything more than rotate (in neutral; and there will be a little end play). Noises can be really subjective, and worn axle bearings on old cars are hardly rare. And they're cheap to fix.
