It's kind of a shame but they don't go out of their way to check and determine any cheaper alternatives and they often get people to say OK to their "full bore" quotation and they pay the $1100 repair bill for a car that cost them $300. Time is money to them and most of them are too busy with stuff that pays well to waste amy time on your old project car. Besides he may not have the AMC experience and just trying to discourage that business. He should just go find a "goodguy" mechanic with the proper experience. He should live next door to Ken Ames or Mark Price or well-versed similar someone and he would not have problems like this. If you have old cars and don't do the repairs for yourself you need some friends close by to help you along with things. _____________________________________________________________________ Ralph Ausmann - Hillsboro, OR <ralph.ausmann@xxxxxxxxxxx> Business Card Page - http://mysite.verizon.net/res79g4m/ "I have an inferiority complex. But it's not a very good one." ------original message----------- From: Justin Shelton <justinshelton@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: rear diff needed for Pacer Howdy: A friend of mine caught the AMC bug from me and just bought a '75 Pacer DL with auto tranny. It has a whine in the differential, and his mechanic says it will cost about $1100 to rebuilt! He was shocked and sad that his new toy needed so much money put into it right up front, so I told him to just stick in a used one. He is in South Bend, IN, and I do not know the local parts yards that have AMCs in them. Questions: 1. Anyone have a spare diff laying around they'd be willing to part with? 2. What other AMCs of that vintage share the same differential? I hope that Gremlins and Hornets use the same, maybe even the Matador?? Thanks, guys. ___________________________________________________________
