Hey folks,
Anyone that remembers our discussion and the pictures that I supplied of
a new $365.00 set of Hooker Super Competition headers that I bought would
not recommend Hookers to anyone. If you recall, they were completely
UNUSABLE. The workmanship was atrocious. Some of the ports hardly even
resembled the proper dog leg shape. Some were not even rectangular, but
very roughly square with mig wire hanging all out. The collector cone is
wide open so that I could see lots of daylight when I held them up and
looked inside. A very crude set of thin gaskets was supplied with port
holes smaller than any AMC head ever had. After MANY phone calls from
Louisiana to California, I got to talk to a management person at Hooker who
told me that the lack of quality in my headers were the norm now since all
Hooker headers are (at that time) made in Mexico. Some of my photos show
the Mexico stamp. He agreed to take them back, but I had to pay the
shipping costs.
NOW, since then, I have purchased a set of the same headers at a swap
meet which are unused. They could be older or newer than the unusable ones
that I bought new. The guy that I bought them from knew they were also of
very poor quality, although better than my new ones had been. Therefore,
he sold them to me for $20.00 with the thought that I could possibly rework
them to make them somewhat useable. The ports are somewhat better,
although still misshapen, and the collector is still open to the wind.
I do not think that is the kind of product that we ought to settle for.
