258 ran until 1991 (!) in Wranglers & the late-80's in J-trucks & Wagoneers (1988?). Be aware that the later manifolds had a bunch of smog crap in/on them, though. FWIW, my friend's 1979 Cherokee Chief (258/TH400/Q-Trac) manifolds appear identical to the 70's AMC car pieces. - . - The 258 manifolds AFTER 1980 - those being 1981 - '86 are the DESIREABLE units as they FLOW one hell of a lot more than the earlier units. AMC spent cash on these to get them to flow. Only 'smog' crap is that BBD 2bbl carb - with stepper motors etc. If you're good with those - when they run - they run well .....BUT - The Intake Manifold is the Unit of Choice of Moab Race Jeep builders. They put a $12.00 aluminum 4bbl. adapter on the Aluminum - water heated / cooled '81 AMC Intakes - and add a 390 cfm 4bbl. carb . You can run the stock Intake / Exhaust Manifolds from an '81 & up AMC 6 . Use an '82 Plymouth Volare 2bbl Carb to get rid of the dreaded BBD carb the '81 AMCs' came with . You'll need to switch the 'ball' socket to the other side of the carb - but that is it for linkage mods . This is the Best way to go for Carbed' AMC 6 engines. If you want Fancy - look for the Weber Carb Kit on eBay or in JEEP groups on Yahoo.
