Dan, thanks for the input. Like I said, I found an AMC radio at the junk yard that is functional, and I'm trying to find a plastic case/box like the project boxes they sell at Radio Shack to mount it in, then bolt to floor or dash tray. Hopefully this won't look too tacky. When I owned my 74 Gremlin (25+ years ago) I cut out the lighter/ash try and mounted an underdash FM/cassette unit, with a power amp and put speakers in the door. I had to mount the speaker grills upside down because the window crank wouldn't clear the top of them. What size speakers fit in the doors? If you don't have a/c, various shallow units will work. I have a/c, I got a repalcement center dash piece to hack up and my modern Blaupunky reciever sticks out about 2" and looks strange, but there's no other alternative that's ergonomically workable, except maybe a center console.
