Hi, my name is Bill and I am a triple Gremlin owner. I have modified and 1976 AMC Gremlin 232 cu.in. engine hooked to an automatic transmission and did end up with about a 200 horse power engine. I did the following to the original engine: 1. Bored engine .030" over. 2. Complete overhaul of the engine with new pistons and the engine was blueprinted. 2. I installed a mild cam, 272/264 degree, which was as hot a cam recommended without installing a stall converter on the transmission which I did not want to go to the expense of doing. 3. Clifford 4-barrel intake. 4. Clifford split dual headers with Turbo mufflers. 5. Holley 390 cfm carburetor. This was a mistake because it was to small. That is right it was to small. I had to make many modifications to the carb in order to get it to work properly. A 450 cfm carb would have been much better, I think. I am going to put a 600 cfm Eldabrock on the 258 cu. in. engine I will be building up this winter. This engine will be hooked to a 4-speed standard transmission and will have the most radical cam I can find. 6. Raised the compression slightly to about 9 to 1. 7. I used stock ignition. 8. Installed a B & M shift kit in the 904 Chrysler automatic transmission. 9. I use a K & N air filter. On the computer program that I have, it indicates that this engine has about 200 hp. I have had my car on the drag strip and by best ET is 17.162 and my best speed is 79.168 mph. My major problem is that I do not have a posi rear end and I have difficulty getting off the line and spin the tires again when it shifts from first to second. I get my quickest ET allowing a 1, 2, and 3 shift. I get my fastest speed allowing only a 1 and 2 shift. When you install the 4-barrel carburetor, you do not install it the same way you do on a V-8 engine. I did initially until someone pointed out what I had done and the results of this type of installation. The primary jets are in the front of the carburetor and therefore cylinders 1,2, and 3 get a richer mixture of fuel than do cylinders 4,5 and 6. When I remounted the carburetor sideways, I realized a great increase in low end torque and an increase in horsepower. That change alone netted a reduction in my ET by .500 and an increase in speed of 2 mph in the quarter mile. Prior to the change I had only a little trouble getting off the line, not so now. With my 258 cu.in. and 4-speed standard transmission in my 1978 AMC Gremlin I am making the following additional changes which according to the computer will yield 300+ hp: 1. 600 cfm Eldabrock carburetor. 2. Increase compression ratio to 10.5/11.5 to 1. 3. 290 degree cam. 4. MSD Ignition system including an MSD distributor and coil. 5. Electric fuel pump. 6. Electric water pump drive. 7. Electric cooling fan for the radiator. 8. Fuel cooling container. 9. A ram air intake system if I can engineer one. Everything will be switched so that during the actual drag, in that this car has manual steering, the engine will be driving the car and a free-wheeling alternator. The ignition system and the electric fuel pump will be operating off of only the battery. I have just purchased a posi rear end for this car because with the high mileage tired engine in the car now, I cannot keep the right rear wheel hooked up at all in the first two gears. I have to keep patting the accelerator. When it rains, taking off from a stop is like driving on ice. It is actually dangerous to drive on a wet road with the stock hp to car weight ratio. I am hoping that with the posi and a better wheel/tire selection I will be able to convert the 300 hp to contact with the pavement. Hope this has been informative. I bought one of those "Limited Edition" BBG AMX's that I saw sell on Ebay a few months ago for $250 for one, for $23 down at my local Toys R Us store this past week. The TRU had 6 of them on the shelf at the Fairfax City area store in Virginia. Guess they're not TOO limited, LOL. Being as how I"m getting married in 4 months, I guess I"ll have to cut back on my "AMC" acquisitions soon! I hope to have the Gremlin(s) ready for the wedding, I would like to use them in it, but the Fiancee is saying No way. :( Well, guess I can still use the GT as the getaway car, so it'll get in the wedding pictures. Hmm, purple wedding dress, bright Sun Orange Gremlin...nice combo! Maybe I should use the gold Gremlin instead.... :) Would be nice to have the sunroof available but that's a LTP - Long Term Project. Oh well. Hopefully I won't have to sell off anything, like I hear some newly married couples have to do...I already have the house, we already have her 16-year-old teenager, so there's no more expensive "acquisitions" to make AFTER we get married. Anyone want to trade me a paid honeymoon for a project '76 Gremlin? :) Hmm, two nights in a Southeast DC motel? Nah... Guess I'll work on garage organizing some more today, finding floor space, and packing stuff "upstairs". Even with two "small" Gremlins inside, there's not much room, but I can move the non-essentials up into the attic space for storage. Well, times awastin', gotta do some work while the sun shines ( and it isn't raining! ). AMC ya, folks Jerry Woodbridge, VA Soon to be Mr. AND Mrs. Gremlin Owner... ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ Message: 2 Date: Sat, 2 Jun 2001 19:02:40 EDT From: Meatplow33@xxxx Subject: Re: <toys> BBGreen AMX by Ertl is out, and purchased... congratulations on getting ready to get married, is this your first time? what size are the bbg amx? thanks, craig [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ Message: 3 Date: Sun, 03 Jun 2001 05:17:34 -0000 From: cyebo@xxxx Subject: horsepower limits on inline 232? Hey all, i was reading were the 232 in my Gremlin has 135 stock horses. I was told that i could get 200 out of it or so with a bunch of mods. I am thinking 65 horses with headwork, cam, 4 barrell n intake, dual exhaust, electronic ignition, uping the compression from 8 to1 to 10 to 1 and more! Some say i can get up to 300 plus. I cant believe I can only gain 65 horses after all that. Id say you would get at least 125 to 150 horses or so. Whats everyone think? ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ Your use of Yahoo!
