While I have thought about it I doubt if I would ever change it out. If I was going to do anything for fun I would change out the auto and put a straight stick in it. You can tell I am from the old school. Then my legs start hurting and I am glad it is an auto. The only reason I question it is back what seems like a hundred years ago actually close to 45 years ago when I graduated from high school my friends were all getting hot cars and I wanted one too. Well my father wanted me to go back to school so he said if we turned the 60 Comet into a hot rod would that make me happy. So we found a 65 Mustang that had been totaled and put the drive train in the Comet. It was a 289 with a four barrel, three speed. Have no idea what gears were in the rear end. It would do exactly what I said before it would smoke the tires, jerk your neck going into second and you
didn't have much of a problem seeing 90 or more.I am just surprised that the Gremlin weighing I think about the same as the Comet with the same size engine wouldn't be more of a machine. That's all I was thinking. As for as mine goes the 6 banger is good enough for me. I have never had any one blowing their horn at me because I am so slow starting from a red light. It has enough power where I am not nervous about merging on the expressway and it I think it would run 70 all day long. I am just happy I got a car people want to take pictures of, give me thumps up when I ride now the street and everyone seems to have a story to tell me about the Gremlin in their lives.

Terry,
If you are going thru the work to install a V8, then put the 360 in it. The cost is the same. Keep the 360 stock and it'll last a long time, and still have plenty of power, but not too much that'll get you in trouble.
Going to a 304 will only accomplish the V8 sound, but not enough "Fun Power" to make it worth the effort.
Your 6 Cyl rated, model 15 rear end will hold up to the stock 360 output as long as you don't push it forever doing the one wheel wonder burn out for a mile long.
If you got some extra cash, have a posi unit installed or find a model 20 with the posi in it already. Either way, you want to figure out the rear ends gear ratio, cause you really want to be around the 3.5 range for overall performance and gas mileage.
My 2 Gremlins, 1 hornet and 1 Pacer, all came with the 304 V8, and all of them of course had wimpy highway gears at around the 2.70 ratio. I had to power brake them all to get some tire smoke action. Changed them all over to the mid 3's gear ratio, put the 360 in the Hornet and one gremlin and put the 401 in the Pacer and the other Gremlin and they all are tire smokin fun toys now. Ya, the ones with the 401 are of course faster, but the 360 goes pretty good in stock form.

OK gang.Since you guys should know if I stick a 304 in my Gremlin are you telling me it won't smoke the tires, jerk my neck when I shift into second gear and I can eat my lunch while it goes from 50 to a 100. I just thought going by the performance I get out of the 6 banger in mine a 304 would be all you would need to have a sweet street machine. I guess I was wrong. Oh well at my age with my health and poor eye sight if I had some thing like you guys are talking about I wouldn't have it long. I figure the first time I took it out it would end up the side of a tree and I would be taking a ride in a real nice car a Lincoln Hearse. The better half would be happy she probably take my life insurance money and find her a young stud.

Got myself a great deal on an 80's era 360 that was bored .40 over less than 4,000 miles ago. Looking for recommendations regarding a cam and flat top pistons. Thoughts?
