When they started getting heavy into smog equipment it depended on the motor size, trans (auto/manual 3 or 4 speed) rear end gear ratio. These were all taken into account at that time. You'll find same year/model cars with different smog controls because the items I listed. You could have a Hornet Hatchback, one with a smog pump and one without because of the difference in transmission. Later on everything got all the attachments.

I knew they had smog control on older cars but I didn't think it got real big until around 74 when they put the converters on them and went to the smaller gas filler holes so you only use unleaded gas. You know on most cars you can tell year of the car by looking at the tailights. The tailights on the 77&78 were both marked 76. I always thought that was strange since 77 was the first year they used those taillights.

If it was a California car then it definitely would have had all the smog equipment. Even back in 1966 some California cars had smog pumps.

My 77 Gremlin with the 258 had only a pcv valve on it new. It didn't have an air pump or a catalitic converter. Now the 78 I have now with the 232 had everything on it.
