I knew they had smog control on older cars but I didn't think it got real big until around 74 when they put the converters on them and went to the smaller gas filler holes so you only use unleaded gas. Now you guys are making be wonder about my 77. I bought it in 80 from the original owner who was an old man. It only had 17,000 miles on it. I remember when I looked at it that it didn't have a smog pump and had the bigger gas intake on it and I ask him about it. He said that was the way it came out of the factory. I think it has been a few years ago that some mechanics told me that it was last car they came that way. I know if the old man had it changed over he had some one do a lot of work. They would have had to out an older intake-exhaust manifold and a new exhaust system on it. Since it was the first year with the gas intake behind the plate I have
no idea where they would have gotten the big gas intake from. My mother bought the 78 that have I have now about two months after I bought my 77 so I had a lot to compare it to and it looked factory to me. Something else I never understood. You know on most cars you can tell year of the car by looking at the tailights. The tailights on the 77&78 were both marked 76. I always thought that was strange since 77 was the first year they used those taillights.
