Eddie,
I had a similar problem years ago on my first Gremlin. It turned out to be
a collapsed exhaust lifter. When the intake lifter on the same cylinder opened,
the exhaust escaped through the carb. Thus the "popping" noise.
Unfortunately, I didn't learn this until AFTER I removed the head, paid a
shop to do a valve job and reinstalled the head. When I fired it up, it still
popped through the carb. The day I replaced the lifters, the wife and
I packed the Gremlin up and we drove to San Bernardino, California. Never did
have any more problems.
Good luck.......
