Black was the only constant paint in AMC's history you know. While some
colors were only seen one year like Calcutta Russet, others popped up on
occasion like Hialeah Yellow (68, not for 69, then resurrected for 70 again)
I have often thought AMC would have sold more cars if different colors not
chosen by Stevie Wonder.
Just a few days ago I commented on a stunning 67 color to a major magazine
editor:
==============================
I am sure the car don't look like that now but uber rare champagne color.
Not sure why AMC
discontinued it after 67, but they did that for a number of beautiful colors like 68 only Calcutta Russett for instance. Intest replacing them with colors that one can find in pampers after baby has ate strained peas. Might have sold more cars if most of your cars were not feces colored! Good local friend Gary Partente restored a 67 Rebel, 343 4speed a few years ago and drove by my house with it, simply loved the same color here on a Rebel: the car sometimes pops up on ebaty for buy it now for aboutr $15K on east
coast where it
ended up. ===========================
As for black.....it was a $54 surcharge before 1973. So you could have your
car painted any color except black. Well not true, you just had to pay more in
say 1969 dollars to have it done. $54 a lot of money back then, you could have
bought a passenger side mirror AND a twin grip for that amount.
I am not sure why and no one has ever told me why, but starting 1973, while
Classic Black remained on the paint charts, no longer a surcharge for it. To me,
black AMCs are more collectible than other colors including any of the big bad
colors.
