Yes, had to push brake then button to start so not sure how Jacob, who is
8, did that. Also don't explain how he started it in parking lot of hotel we
stayed at, as I was not near car. Some other oddities, the doors would sometimes
lock and unlock mysteriously. The key fob thing had a lock, unlock and trunk
deal on it. But inside car would lock automatically. So kept door open while at
beach. Reading a Nissan site a mechanical key could never start a 'intelligent
key' ignition car (push button ignition) though. I never saw a key of any type
unless it was inside the fob, but like under hood, never looked for it. The
remote lock/unlock thing seemed to have a range of 15 feet however as the kids
had lots of fun with that option making it chirp from distance. Was neat
car but would never own one it's not AMC powered! Paige did panic when locked
key fob thing inside trunk and even considered calling Hertz for advise, but her
phone was inside trunk, along with fishing bait, tackle and cooler however, but
being old school I eventually found a tiny lever bottom of dash to release trunk
open.
And I honestly don't think the inside trunk release is a good thing, to me,
it is sad reflection of society with kidnappings and carjackings.
Before this thread gets way off base with non AMC crap....have to add AMC
stuff to it as per Jim Stone's amc-list rules from last century (anyone ever
hear from him anymore?). Sold my 81 Eagle 4x4 wagon with the 4cyl, 4spd, it will
be driving around Ypsilanti, Michigan. No push button dash dealie, no gas door
release rod to step on, no push button anything except AMC AM/FM radio though.
Horn is push button also if that counts......

E ddie,
sorry but your way off base on that button. It only works if the key
fob/keyless entry is in the front seat area. Then you have to put your foot
on the brake and hold it or no start. Try to lock key in the car? nope,
won't let you. Try to lock key inside car? nope won't let you. if you
shut the car off and push the button to leave the radio on that is pretty much
the only thing that stays on. Once that FOB is outside the car it won't
start.
The damn things are big cars as far as I'm concerned. You
drove that car, did you realize it did all that running with a 2.5L 4 and a
constant variable trans?
My wife bought one, we have had it for a
couple of years and not one single issue. NONE 24-26 mpg in town, 30-34 on
open highway.
If you look at the serial number and it says 1N then you
got yourself a genuine made in America Nissan. Probably has about the same
amount of U.S. content as the new "big three's".
On the Altima
note. Wife bought a new 98 loaded, leather, everything. She put over a
100K on it, odometer broke at 139K when my son was driving it. A year later
i put a used cluster in it. Using my poor math skills it has a minimum of
165K, probably 175+ It shakes rattles and rolls, it needs motor mounts,
struts and that is all. Has a ricer exhaust on it my son installed. I drive
it now since it gets 24-26 or so compared to 14.8 on summer blend fuels in my
Grand Cherokee. It's a POS, but it just keeps on going. Wife said to sell it,
nah, it puts 5 vehicles on a 4 driver household which believe it or not
dropped our insurance by $400!
I don't want one, but in our extended
family, My BIL and his two daughters have three Altimas, my wifes makes four,
her cousin makes 5 and his has an honest 160K on it! 2008 models all of them,
one 2009. For a certain part of the market Nissan hit
the nail square on the head, or so it seems.

V8 Heat Riser
I have a confession to make, I rented a Nissan Altima a
few weeks ago to drive down to Corpus Christi to visit brother. Good
running car, great AC system, great gas mileage too. No key. That's
right no key, you have little alarm thingie on chain that opens doors,
locks doors, opens trunk and that is it. Once car is opened, ANYONE can
start car as I found out when 8 year old Jacob pressed ignition switch.
My first thoughts were 'uh, didn't RAMBLER have this push button crap on
dash in early 1906s?' Second thought was anyone could steal the car and
I'm used to leaving my windows open on my AMCs...it is no big deal, and
dissipates heat inside car and not like anyone will steal a AMC.
But
once car is unlocked, even seagull could start car, didn't like that
feature. I believe this was a 4 banger something under hood, never
bothered to look, unusual for a car guy, but never looked and not sure
why. Something that really creeped me out on the Nissan Altima was
inside the trunk has a 'emergency release' to pull in case you are
carjacked and kidnapped and thrown in trunk. Think about
that.
Something else on the car I see problems with is the gas door
release lever is next to scuff plate on driver door, who is idiot who
put that there. Never mind, whoever idiot designer or enginess was might
be brilliant....as millions will break this little plastic piece of junk
simply getting in or out of car....therefore Nissan will sell millions of
those flimsy plastic gizmos. Otherwise nice car, good room in trunk,
inside car, kids liked the fadeaway courtesy lights inside car. The only
reason I rented this Datsun Altima was because they were out of Chevy
Malibus.
One more thing, AMC was in talks with Datsun in late 1970s.
Think about that.....if AMC had teamed up with Datsun, as opposed to
Renault, better than average chance AMC would still be around in some
format. Best of all, our push button dash dealies would be in vogue
again. Eddie
