[BaadAssGremlins] re: eagle towing capabilities

Jesse, my 82 Eagle has a Class III (3) hitch on it and has towed a lot of AMC iron and
trailers thru years. It has 210,000 miles on it now since 1994.

this is it hooked up the the U-Haul when the Houston chapter & me did the AMC national
meete in 2001:

over 1 ton of stuff in that trailer. But it has towed cars twice it's weight. A Matador at
3800 lbs, a 74 Hornet wagon down to Corpus Christi, I could go on, over 30 AMcs thru
years, even pulled SUV's that are over 5000 lbs out of the ditches in this area after
floods. No problems. The transmission has never been rebuilt either and is quite
indestructible.

Yes! Add a external transmission cooler.....heat kills trannies. I have big end to end
external on it bought from O'Reillys in 1996 and been there since, makes huge difference.
I also run the Eagle with no thermostat and no water, all anti freeze, zero water.
Electric fans, you can fit two small Hyundai fans on this radiator, they are about $4 each
at pick a parts, but also help out, especially in areas with extreme temps like here in
Houston.....it was 102 degrees today and we just broke record for hottest June in Houston
recorded history, even hitting 105 6 or so times, but the Eagle....which I drove today
with one of my minions, never misses a beat. Didn't tow anything but this is a car that
has taken a beating DAILY for almost 20 years and never complains. And driven daily in
Houston traffic, whether traffic locked to standstill, or blowing around 24 lanes on I-10
at 80mph. Almost forgot to mention loaded a complete 401 in back of it a few months ago
and drove home....it wasn't too happy about that, looked like it wanted to pop wheelie,
but again, no complaints, and drove home about 60mph with complete intake to pan 401 in
back, along with hubcaps, extra cranks and what not!
Happy towing, have a great 4th of July,

OK, so, there are a lot of advantages to the 998 trans, especially for
performance/weight/mileage, however, if I was going to do consistent towing, I would
upgrade a few things. ?

727 trans from an 80 up Wagoneer. ?Have it built for towing before you put it in and it
will last forever, if you get your shifts points right with your kickdown linkage. ?You
can ?keep your T/C and bolt right up or use a Wagoneer T/C and get a lo range with very
little modification. ?

Good tranny cooler. ?Lots of em out there, get one that fits.

Electric fan with relay. ?a little more more power from your engine... better cooling,
?more versatility and your water pump will last forever! ?

plenty to do for power, but this is a start. I have the trannys if you need one!?
