After 72 the hp went down, and was measured differently if I recall. The 401s in 1974 were anemic about 250hp or so, bridged rockers, smogged and fedded out.

On the crank question:

Did all 401s have a steel crank?
Olly

No...you had forged and cast cranks

good book above whether novice or pro.

Now back to the royal wedding.

hp for the 401 depends on the year . i think the 77 was around 150 hp.

Course the etc engine has less hp then a slightly modified 401. Heck even stock for stock isn't the 401 more hp? I remember 330 hp for the 01.

Now that I think about it.... I've got this Boss 351 Cleveland motor just layin' around. Think I'll ditch that ol' sbc and try something a bit more interesting.  Wait....I got a 406 Tri-power FE Ford big block too...And the distributor is almost in the right place on both of them...What'a you think Bart?   Gary 'TheMix'

That's what we're talkin bout ! ! ! A member on the Yahoo Pacer group put a caddy engine in his Pacer years ago, and had fantastic times with it at the strip... And it was a conversation piece no matter where he went..

I do like chevys (own 3 of them for my daily drivers) but I agree,, IF you are going to put something in to an AMC other then an AMC engine,, it should be "different" A chevy small block 350 is too "Cookie Cutter" Go the extra mile and stuff a new generation 8.1 liter Chevy into it, or maybe a Triton V8 out of a wrecked Mustang and make it worth the effort..... But,, no matter what anyone does to their AMC,, make it "yours", put all the Ideas and Dreams into it that you want to, and Have FUN ! ! ! !

I love seeing traditional hot rods with motors like a "Nailhead Buick" or a "394 cubed Olds" and sure you pay more for parts and having it rebuilt but its much more satisfying in the end either blowing the doors off or outshining some belly button ass "tree fiddy" swapped set of wheels.
