Way back in the early to mid 70's, a guy I knew had a '71 Grem w/an LT1 engine/trans. He used the engine (complete w/headers) right out of a wrecked (1st year LT1 Vette. I never got the details from him about if he had to mod anything or if he made the engine mounts to move the engine forward/back/etc for clearance. He's still around... Just a little older and burned out from all those gas fumes he was exposed to working in a junkyard... I'll have to look him up and ask. What're you using for engine mounts and are you starting with a V8 or I6 crossmember? Or are you using a block plate? While I prefer to keep things AMC, I definitely understand going the Chevy route. Example: friend of mine and I built engines at the same time. I started w/a good 401 core for my '74 Javelin (I had the block re-mand, not rebuilt), he started with a DART block and Eagle rotating assy (final engine displacement was appx 434). We both went w/roller cams/lifters/rockers. I used edelbrock heads, he used AFRs (slightly larger intake ports). The ignition, carbs, intake we're all pretty much the same (Edelbrock for intake/carb and MSD for Ignition). When all was said and done, I'd spent almost $2K more for my stuff. And I had to really work to find parts. Backordered, even when I could get them. So there are many practical reasons (for the Chevy) and only one good reason (to stay AMC all the way) for making an individual choice in engine platform. I'm still considering a SBC for my Grem (currently has a '70 360 w/51cc dog leg ports). While (using a non-AMC engine is) against the orthodoxy of AMC bible literature, I'd be interested in knowing how your project turns out. I'm never too old to learn something new (and different). Good luck. --- On Sat, 4/23/11, dale <dcharlesfridley@xxxxxxxxx> wrote:
