Longtime AMCer Marc Montoni is thinking about possibly having a small run, providing there is interest, in a 78 Concord AMX, possibly 78 Gremlin GT flair kit made. The reason I am forwarding it here to badassgremlin group is because of the questions concerning whether the flairs would interchange with Spirit and Eagle, possibly retrofit to earlier Hornet Series. This conversation picked up off the amc-list. This is interesting to me, because I believe the wheelwell area changed, or was different for Eagle. I could probably dig out partsa books and look at part numbers but too busy this time of year to do so. The original front spoilers used on the 77 and 78 Hornet & Concord AMX were urethane. They also were covered with a elastomeric finish to protect them from stone chips. The bigger problem was that they fell off. You could be driving thru school zone and they fell off. The AMC memo specifically stated that " the spoiler and extensions are attached with self drilling screws. If a urethate part becomes gouged or torn, it must be replaced. Due to the chemical proterties of the material it is not possible to repair it." The seal on these that held them to the sheetmetal sometimes came off and you could fix it with 3M Double Coated Foam Tape, or at least that is what AMC recommended in 77. I don't know if the spoiler is same on 78 Gremlin GT, as is same on 78 AMX, chances are it is, and while flairs different on 77 Hornet AMX (they are corner flairs 77 AMX press photo http://www.planethoustonamx.com/press_photos/77_amx.jpg and original ad http://www.planethoustonamx.com/amc_ads/77_AMX.jpg 78 AMX press photo http://www.planethoustonamx.com/press_photos/78_amx.jpg and original ad http://www.planethoustonamx.com/amc_ads/78_amx.jpg 78 Gremlin GT press photo (it's on my site too, just could not find it, duh) and original ad http://www.planethoustonamx.com/amc_ads/78_gremlin_gt_ad.jpg and my own 71 SC/360 which has a 77 Hornet AMX flair kit http://www.planethoustonamx.com/sc360christmas2004.jpg but pretty sure the same front air dam on the 77 to 78 AMX, just different wheelwell extensions. Still, if anyone here can help Marc out or think they might be interested in a reproduction set, feel free to comment. I would like to know if the wheelwells are SAME for 78 thru 83 Concord and also interchange with 79-83 Spirit and 80-88 Eagle! Eddie Stakes =============================== From: Marc Montoni Rambler@xxxxxxxxx To: amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx I'm trying to guage interest in having a set of spoilers made for the 78 Concord AMX and 78 Gremlin GT. The manufacturer http://www.bodykits.org/custom.html needs 10 pre-orders at $675 for tooling (they will also charge for freight). Those of you with these cars who want a set of NEW flares & front chin spoiler, please let me know right away. No money now, this is just the interest stage. If you don't have the ability to buy, though, it would probably be better to not sign up. I am looking for people who can go in with me on the buy, so this is serious. They will also need one car to make the mold from, in California (ROAD TRIPPPPPP!!!!). Supplier of the donor-mobile gets a free kit. ========================= I'm absolutely for sure the wheel flares will fit 78 & up. The Concord (and Eagle, and Spirit) changed little sheetmetal-wise, until the end in 1988. I'm reasonably certain they will also fit all Gremlins & Hornets back to 1973 when the hatchback Hornet was introduced; and I don't think it makes any difference whether the car is a hatch, sedan, or wagon. Looking at photos of the earlier bodies (70-72), it sure looks to me like the wheel arches follow the same profile. Ergo, I have little doubt the ground FX kit for a 78 Concord AMX would also fit a 70 Hornet or an 88 Eagle. Now the front spoiler is probably a different story. The 5-MPH bumper standard that went into effect in 1973 probably changed the front valence somewhat; and the 77 Gremlin/78 Corncob new front end treatment probably means the spoiler will need some extra bracketry or alteration to make it work in pre-77 Gremlins and pre-78 Hornets. But I'm not sure. I don't have a spoiler on a car to look at so I can't see where they mount. If they mounted to the radiator support, I'd bet it would work just fine without doing anything special. C'mon, I know there's a few owners out there somewhere who want to get a spoiler package. Speak up! Broke HS grad ricers pay between $500 and $3500 for ground FX packages for their rides. Most of us are in our prime earning years; I would think we could make an investment in this without too much pain. -- Marc ======================== Eddie Stakes 713.464.8825 eddiestakes@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx www.planethoustonamx.com ------------------------------------ Yahoo!
