If we weren't flooding again (and electricity still up, lightning not problem but under tornado warning and flood warning!) I would take a photo of the page in the big AMC dealers book I mentioned earlier showing the fuel illustrations which shows the small solenoid disconnected thing in back under the car, but also shows return fuel line.

Interesting is that my 82 white Eagle has this return line disconnected under the hood, the fuel filter originally was same type on my wife's 88 Eagle, one line in....two lines out, one of them goes to carb the other returns to tank. I put single in, single out fuel filter on this when I ripped out a pile of useless emissions items on the car 10 years ago and about 100,000 miles ago. The car is emissions exempt so no problems there. But has tons more horsepower after I did that a decade ago. But no problems with the 'whoosh' effect on this white 82 Eagle when i remove gas cap regardless of how hot in Houston.

I don't think the newer tanks with the screw on gas caps are vented are they. I know when we had the emission testing they use to do a pressure test on the gas tank.

I looked in the illustrated huge (foot long!) dealer order catalog I have while is nothing but illustrations for 83-87 Eagles, and it shows the gas tank, lines, and vents. I am guessing the vent on very center top of the tank might be plugged, don't know. But this would not explain same effect I guess on other earlier AMCs I have same problem with, especially during 'summer' April thru October!

Eddie . Check your owners or shop manual. Some cars use em some don't , you also might have a glogged line somewhere. Put a non vented one on my 65 dodge and it sucked up the bottom as it emptied and broke a seam . Paul

Hi Ken, no, the gas vapor recovery is gone. The car does have a gas return line, one fuel
line to carb, the other for overflow(?) back to tank however. The car passed emissions no
problem. This air in tank sometimes also happens on some of my other AMC models also, even
the 68 Rebel convertible 'Machine' sometimes has this 'whoosh!' effect when opening the
gas cap.
