I buy my gas at the Airport 100 octane LL (Low Lead).  Their pumps are the old style so there no issues with it, but some will not pump it into a car because you are not paying a road tax on it (even through the tax on AV gas is 2X higher).  They will however pump it into a red gas can for you.  I own a airplane, so I know the staff at my airport, so I don't have a problem with it.
Another fix would be to pump it into a gas can at the gas station, and then transfer it into your car there.  It's a pain, but it is faster.
Good luck
Ed

The answer to this can be found in the latest issue of American Motoring news letter on page 12 "Tech Questions with Jeff Reeves.  What he says is that the old gas pumps used to had a long, curved nozzle that would fit in further down into our cars gas filler neck and fill the tank.  Todays modern pumps have a shorter nozzle nozzle and are designed to be more vapor-sensitive, because of this, they are easily confused by the desogn of the older tanks.  This makes the pump cut-off permaturely.
Jeff gives more detail in his colume.

The tank vent is plugged up
Comes off top of tank to a tube that runs to engine bay to charcoal canister
That's my guess

Okay, I probably missed this but here goes. All this gas tank talk has me wondering if there is a fix for my 74 Gremlin's tank. It will not take gasoline unlesss I hand control the flow as slow as possible and even then it needs to be "burped" , especially the closer to full it gets.
