I'm in Cable TV; have been for years.  In the 70's, we used to hold the Western Convention in early December, usuallly at the Disneyland Hotel.

The elevators would be full of these guys in Hawaiian Shirts with drinks in their hands and overseas caps on their heads. There would be an occasional sash or such with the name of their group or ship affiliation.

I wished them all the fun and booze their reunion brought but as a veteran myself I knew it would never offset what they had been through.  Somehow those chance encounters tied my tongue and I couldn't get my thanks out B4 they departed the elevator but I was glad to hear their revelry; .....God Bless 'em.....Ron
