There is a company that advertises in Hemmings that for something like $30,
will send you information on 'how many are left' I think they are called AIG or
something. It is a waste of time and $30 I assure you. Here is one of the OLDEST
files on my site:
which the original article was written back in mid 1980s if I recall. The
company still is around although don't think it is same AIG that just pissed
away $440,000 on lavish party for CEOs after government gave them $700 billion
to stay in business.
The bottom line is no one knows. You can go by what is in databases in
government agencies simply because those are registered cars. And as mentioned
in the link above, for every one you see there might be 5 more sitting in field
and weeds.
My own SC/360 is a case in point, it is not registered. It is driven, just
don't have Texas tags on it. The 69 BBO Javelin, 74 Javelin, 74 AMX, 74 Hornet
Sportabout, 68 AMX I have also are not in system. There is a estimated 18
million cars in the Houston metro area. There are 200-240 of them 'registered'
AMCs with tags. Just the people I know alone, their AMCs sitting up, or under
resto, or drag cars, parts cars, whatever, is twice the registered cars
alone.
The Gremlin was one of the most successful cars in AMC's history. They sold
a shitload of them. On the other hand, they were not well built, that is, like
the Hornet, were more of a disposable car (for lack of better term)
that one would drive or 100K or whatever then move on. And they didn't get
the undercoating treatment other AMCs got therefore dooming many of them to rot
in weld and folds, especially in northern tier states and Canada.
My bookie says the over/under on how many Gremlins are left in 2008 would
be in the 4000 to 8000 range. Several reasons: despite the mentioned above, the
Gremlins have a sort of cult like following, and racers like them. And not to
mention all the great reproductions tuff that has come onto the market for
Gremlins in last 10-15 years therefore saving some from cannbalism. I think that
is a high end number, however you have to look at total Gremlin production from
1970 1/2 thru 1978.
Ya'll have good evening and don't waste $30 on that AIG crap, they ain't
got a clue on how many anythings are left, that is, if they are even still in
business. Send $30 my way and i'll send you a FEMA MRE (meal ready to eat) and
tell you anything you wish to hear except I love you.
