Maine, Alabama and Mississippi quickly come to mind for states theat didn't
(not sure if they do still) issue titles. The 71 Matador 2 door I had with
14,000 miles on it (and I put a whopping 250 miles onm it in 11 years) shown
here was sold new at Bill Whiten in Birmingham. Check out all the original
paperwork here. In one, you will see the original Alabama 'title' which is a
bill of sale basically. I sold this car for $2650 after a third time on
ebay and fellow flew in and drove it home to Marietta, GA, so ya'll in that neck
of woods keep eyes open for it, neat little car.
Since Texas mentioned there are a variety of ways to get titles for
vehicles. Yes, you have to take it to a DPS station for inspection where a
trooper goes all over it. Usually the vehicle has to have at least two VINS on
it so hopefully your plastic crappy door tag is still intact, or be prepared to
pull off your steering box, not that all of the VIN's are partially stamped
behind there which is urban legend for some reason. But you can get a title thru
a variety of ways. For instance if a mechanic does work on your car and you
don't pay, the mechanic seizes the vehicle and gets mechanic's lien, then later
title. Salvage title or storage titles. I have gotten DOZENS of them from police
auctions and storage lots here in Houston, as used to go to their auctions, and
buy Gremlins, Javelins, Hornets, even AMXs for as little as $20 and as high as
$1000...but they have notary and title person there on premise day of
auction......whereas you are issued a title as soon as you pay for the vehicle
and associated taxes. Running or not, a good 70%-80% of the cars were NOT
running, some even no engine....I simply pushed, pulled, dragged, and some
drove....them next door to my warehouse and shoved them in there, then went back
to maybe bid on another AMC.
I may also add that I was the ONLY person to ever bid on these American
Motors cars in the 80s and 90s, and if I didn't bid on them......they went
directly to pcik a part www.houstonpickapart.com whereas it
is Texas Death Row and the car, no matter how complete and desirable, would last
2-6 weeks in the yard before gettign crushed. I can easily tell you of stuff
people consider 'rare' and 'collectible' from SX/4 SCCA factory sponsered race
cars, to SC/Ramblers, Machines, AMXs, convertibles, the list is endless and well
over 11,000 AMCs since 1983. Seems I just wrote something about this again on
the www.amccars.net site 'amc forum' and
also mentioned that AMC *ALSO* had a car crushing program.
This is whole thread:
but this was simply my reply:
anyways, back to titles, if in Texas, yes a variety of ways to get a title,
and the 'process' of going thru the motions of hearings, sending out certified
letters and making every effort to get ahold of the previous owner(s) who may or
may not want to cooperate with you is long and cumbersome that is why you see
some simply change tags, which is another story for another day.
