About wrestling since Brad mentioned it. Ya'll stay with me here. In about
1973, maybe 74, I was picking up shifts at Spanish Kitchen, a small greasy spoon
Mexican food place on North Beach down in Corpus Christi. Nothing special about
this place except my two neighbor's dads worked there, so I was in at 14 washing
dishes. North Beach was a really rough area, lots of tattoo parlors, prostitues,
and bikers, as it is on a small strip of sand north of the port, over the harbor
bridge Corpus annexed somehow. Anyways, lots of wrestlers used to eat at that
place, the food was really good, some of the bext enchaladas one would ever eat,
done right, in oven, melted cheese dripping everywhere with onions. So Jose
Lothario, a big fan favorite, was there one night with wife eating.
Across the restaurant was another wrestler, Wahoo McDaniel, big indian guy,
with his posse. The whole place probably sat 100 people, so they were about ten
tables apart, and Wahoo got up, walked over to Jose's table and put his big arms
and hands down on it. I was watching from back, as were the cooks, but few
others noticed. They noticed a few minues lated when he lifted whole table over,
food, chips, drinks flying everywhere, and they got into it, Jose' wife
screaming. The Nueces County Sherriff's arrived minutes later, but the place had
emptied of customers, and 5-10 or more tables smashed, chairs and stuff broken.
Of course I was in back watching all this going "cool!!"
They were not arrested and promised to pay for all damage. There was
something like $3K of damage. It was all over the news, so we got a LOT of
business, and I got to wash a lot of dishes with extra shifts for weeks. On the
other hand, there was a big match at the Corpus Christi Coleseum coming up in
about a month. And it was going to be headliner Jose Lothario against Wahoo
McDaniel. The place was sold out, something like 6000 tickets, then they sold
SRO on top of that. I don't remember who won, but to this day have often
wondered whether the mayhem that night was rigged to sell tickets. After all
tickets were about $10 each then, so you sell a small section of 300 and pay for
damage. I don't know as Jose did have a good gash on head. I had to clean up a
lot of that stuff too that night. So fake setup or not, the dishwasher still got
shit on. Hey, I was 14 and making $1.75 a hour!
