Barto,
The ‘late-73 switch is absolute. There’s also similar sillyness in 74 with 75 parts (Hornet grilles, for instance).
Let’s not forget, every brochure from every manufacturer says ‘Price and specifications subject to change without notice’ for a reason.
I owned that beautiful ’73 Hornet X 360, and it was an ‘early’ ’73 with the proper ’73 bumpers and rear panel (gas cap above the bumper, license plate below the bumper). See: http://www.javelinamx.com/JavHome/jwr/73hornet360/040605c.jpg
As you know, 1974s got the bigger bumpers and the plate moved up to cover the fuel cap.
Well, my blue Hornet is a late-1973, and it has all the 1974 changes. This is because AMC chose to go to the new-for-1974 federal bumper standards early (possibly as they got low on 73 bumper inventory… and rather than order up another batch, risking ending up with lots of extras at year end, they just swapped to the new stuff). See attached photo.
And if they did it for Hornet, it only makes sense they did it for Gremlin. I know I have seen, many times, what I thought was a ’74 Gremlin for sale, but was described as a ’73…title, VIN and all.

you mean 74-75 grill this late 73 shit is just bull. Now i can jive with the 70 1/2 Camaro/Firebird as the UAW had a strike in late 69 through early 70 thus delaying the release of the new Camaro's and Firebirds for 1970 or the 69 1/2 Ford Maverick as it was released in mid 69 as a 70 model but put out earlier than usual.but this late 73 Gremlin thing i don't believe. Bart
