Well....yes and no. I tell people daily if there was no Toyota, there would be no junkyards. It is a huge myth that some of these newer cars last forever. Here at any Houston pick a part, which has 1500-2000 vehicle per yard, it is loaded with Toyota, Honda, BWM, Volvo, Nissan/Datsun, Kia, Hyundai, and many of these cars barely at or above 100,000 miles.
So what happened? Also lots of Saturn, Geo, in there also, anyone in Houston stop in and check them out. www.houstonpickapart.com for info. If you find a AMC 360, 401 it is about $100.
The problem is really simple. New cars stuff sells for more money. There is no one calling a salvage yard for say, 73 Ambassador fender anymore. So it takes up room. And room is money and so it is scrapped. A Surburban for instance can sit in there for say, 6 months, and you will make a lot of money off it! Same with newer cars and imports, the body shops luv them, as they don't have to buy a 'new' dealership fender for say, Mitsibushi. They will go get a used fender for $350 instead of $750 and pocket difference for them or their shop. You also have tons of 'knock offs' that is places that are making these plastic bumper covers and other parts to
fit modern cars. At 1/2 the cost of going thru dealer.
Supply and demand! nd with scrap metal prices really up in the last 7-10 years, it is not worth a salvage yard to hold onto a old car. I posted on here a 80 Spirit that I offered $350 for at a local auto auction, they bluntly told me 'I can get more in scrap for it than that' so chances are 4 months later now, this car shown here only exists in these photos I took of it. Sad? you betcha.

easier to find than any AMC's. What kind of 400 was it Ford or GM? they made both. Crate motors are too high. Around here crates don't have the complete motor. I saw a sweet Cyclone on ebay it was a convertible. I like the hideaway headlights on them.
Maybe i'll jog down yonder Tennessee area. They have some nice yards down there.

You can still find 340's relatively cheaply. I have sold 4 complete 340 motors for $500.00 - $600.00 in the last 6 months. You can buy new 340 blocks with extra webbing for alot cheaper than you can buy a similar offering from Ford.I just put a stroked 400 (mopar) in a guy's 71 Gremlin.I had plenty of clearance. that's not really true as finding a used 350 nowadays is getting hard as many yards rip em out and sell em to South America.todays chevy crate motors are about the same price as a Ford one.
