Re: [BaadAssGremlins] Converting from 2bbl to 4bbl carb

What V8 you would put in your Gremlin is totally up to you. Most on here will
agree that they would stick with an AMC. Gremlins came with 304 V8 but the 360
and the 401 is basically the same block so it shouldn't be any difference in
putting the engine in the car. Just my 2 cents worth in reality I think the
304 is all you really need for the Gremlin. You will be able to burn rubber,
out run 90% of the cars on the road, it will sound good and look good when you
pop the hood. It would also keep it a little more original. If I was going for
a daily driver that is the way I would go. I can also see where since it
wouldn't be any more work why not drop a 360 or a 401 in it. While I think in
reality a 304 is all you need I can see where a built 401 would be one hell of
a ride. I think the 401 is a bit of overkill for something you going to drive
back and forth to work but a weekend cruiser, something to drive to car shows,
the strip it might be the way to go. I think you are going to have decide what
you are going to do with the car and how much you want to spend. No wrong or
right answer here.

what type of a v8 would yall recomend, whats good hp wise for a grem with a stock frame, i dont want to tiwst the frame and i also want somthing thats easy to put in, i understand that i will have to get mounts, and a new crossmember, the mounts ill prolly be able to make myself. but i dont know about the cross member, i also would pefer an automatic for a few reasons, cant drive a stick yet, and so i wont have to cut into the firewall and floorpan adding the clutch and whatnot. im thinking of calling a few salvage yards around here and seeing what they price engines and trannys at. thanks for all the info

Doc's right about the trans kick down lever...I ended up burning up 2 trannys(904's) before I got smart and went to a full manual valve bodie in the trans. That took care of the kick down lever entirely. After the reverse band went south was when I had enough and went to the 4 speed. I never ever did get the trans kick down to work properly...say like going up a hill and ya stood on the throttle...stoopid thing would kick itself all the way down to first gear...not good to say the least!! Never had an issue with the throttle cable but Doc is right about the headers also and cam...The motor has to beable to breath so headers and a full flow exaust makes a big difference. I also found out that ya have to have a good hot spark to burn that extra fuel also, that helps. Expence is another factor also. You can easily build a V-8 for all the goodies that you can put on an inline. BIG BUCKS!! NO WAMMIES!! remember tha stoopid game show?? lol! Bill Id.

You might also think about up grading to a better cam if you are going
with a 4 bbl. Also you will have to make sure you make the trans kick
down linkage work too or you will ruin the tranny if you have an
automatic. You may also need a longer throttle cable too. Personally I
would just go with a modern 2 bbl to replace that factory crap. My son's
first Javelin came with a 6 cyl engine with a 4 bbl and in my opinion it
was not worth the expense without the headers and a cam. Also you may
have a clearance problem on the headers if you have power steering. Just
my 2 cents.

Besides the intake manifold you will have to buy the headers. Then of course
the carb. Like someone on here said I think it was Doc, excuse me Doc if I am
wrong. By the time you lay out the money for the manifold, the headers, the
carb. and I am sure you will want to do some more to it to beef it up, you
might just think about dropping a 304 in it. You are going yo lay out over a
grand on this. I think a stock 304 will give you just about as much if not
more ump then the beefed up 6 banger. I thought about it for mine but just
couldn't justify the cost to what you would get. Ok gang tell me how wrong I
am.
