If it is a crack I tape the back of the crack and glue it then after it is set I scuff the back of the crack with 80# sandpaper and glue s piece of sheet model plastic to it to re-enforce it or a piece of 1/8" plexiglass. I use 1/8" plexiglass cut to size to replace missing pieces also re-enforcing them from the back. I also use JB Weld for some repairs. My grill is on the delicate side so I made a jig out of 1"X1" square wood that attache's to the grill at all the mounting points so it can be handled easily and not be further damaged while I work on it. One final word make sure everything is clean and scuffed to help the glue adhere properly. "Doc" Yahoo! I'm soon to start my own Gremlin grill repair and have
been reading your posts and others as well to gather
sufficient info before laying hands on mine. I have
two grills I'm going to work on as I don't know which
one I will actually go with yet. I've got the
original 72 grill as well as a later 74+ X that I'm
contemplating using without a bumper. I kinda like
that look too.
On my 72 grill at the top at one of the screw holes, I
have a small piece missing that will need to be built
out and sanded down. On the 74+ grill, the round
built up post/spacer that surrounds the screw hole is
broken out leaving a nice round hole. It will need to
be rebuilt (though maybe I should just scrap that one
and find another?).
Question: What are you using (if anything) as a
backing or holder to limit the spread of the compound
when filling in the crack or missing piece for the
first time. I was thinking taping across the crack or
opening to at least trying for a flat surface on the
exterior side of thegrill and then filling in behind,
removing the tape, then sanding the exterior side....
Not sure that's the best way. Any better methods out
there?
Thanks.
